I think the belt should be involved at 145 because of precedent. Leonard vs Lalonde was contested at 168 and was for both Super Middleweight & Light Heavyweight titles, Hopkins vs DLH was contested at 158 and it was for most of the MW alphabet belts, etc.

It's not going to be for it but it should.

145 is the perfect weight for this fight. I would've preferred for it to be at 147, but 145 is fair.

        No excuses!

Given how the rest of the summer has panned out so far, the boxing world braced for the inevitable – that the fall would be without its biggest fight.

Two pounds almost stood in the way of Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao looking for someone other than each other to fight later in the year. Two pounds threatened to become the latest negative storyline in a summer already flooded with bad news.

In the end, two pounds gives the boxing world something positive to talk about – and for its writers to type about.

The storylines were running thin, other than the same recurring theme – yet another fallout. It was about to become this week’s subject, after Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. became the latest to have his name scratched from a summer schedule that reads more like an E.R. log-in sheet. A rib injury forced the oldest son of Mexico’s most famous fighting family off of Saturday’s “Latin Fury 10” pay-per-view telecast, this on the heels of undefeated Yuriorkis Gamboa being scratched last week. [details]

Cotto weighed 146 for his last fight.
I guess to make 145'll not kill him.

147 should be the weight limit however, roach and arum....all th way

who needs the belt when you are the p4p king and everyone is chasing you for a fight? but i believe cotto's belt is on the line thoughg it wasn't mentioned. its a good thing the cotto camp agree to fight at 145lbs. the catchweight is always at cotto's advantage, this being cotto's turf. pacquiao's limit is 140 lbs. but pacquiao can move to 145 or 147 and packs the same power or even stronger. the problem facing cotto now is how to maximize his advantage. will he go directly attacking and forcing pacquiao to a toe-to-toe fight or will he dance around and keep pac at bay with his jab?

the problem of cotto is that pacquiao can match cotto's power in the inside, granting that cotto will fight from within. worse, he don't have the handspeed and the legs of pacquiao to move from left to right with ease as pac did to diaz and delahoya. in short cotto can't dance around pacquiao. if he fights in the inside, most likelky, pacquiao will use his handspeed to plant that stinging right hooks and uppercuts or the up-and-down combo in a flash before moving away leaving cotto in disarray.

in all indication, pacquiao can outbox cotto both in the inside and outside. he will end up laying flat on his back in 6 or retiring in his stool in 9. there's no other choice.

What's the fuss with 145lbs without a championship belt?

It's still within the welterweight bracket of 141-147lbs....

Two gentlemen has agreed to fight... so fighting at a catchweight of 145lbs must technically be for the Welterweight belt...win or lose!

How can you say stop with the weight? It's got a lot to do with it. It's hard to go up just as it is to go down in weight. When you go down in weight and yourcoming into fights at almost 160 lbs. it's hard to take the xtra weight off. You dehidrate and your stamina is not the same. Why doesn't Pacquiao go up to the 147 lbs. where Cotto is the champ? He has no right to demand a catch weight and be for the tittle. Pacquiao is a great boxer but no one is above the sport. Why are they boxing for the tittle when it's at a catch weight not at the weight the belt belong in?
It will be a great fight either way. Pacquiao is great and I want to see if Cotto is going to step up and be in that elite class of greats.

The belt belong to the 141-147lbs bracket. Fighting at 145 is well within the welterweight bracket. They can even fight at 141lbs and it still is considered Welterweight as long as it doesn't exceed 147lbs.

Two gentlemen fighters has agreed to meet in the ring at 145lbs. One is the smaller champ in 140lbs and the other is the bigger champ in 147lbs. At 145lbs, it equalizes everything between the two fighters. :boobies:

If I'm Cotto and I lost to the Pacquiao....I'll handily surrender to him my belt. What's the point of keeping the belt if you know you were beaten by a better man?!!
