Basically. I remember when some guys first joined this site (won't mention any names) and - I'm assuming they didn't know much about the sport - were claiming Calzaghe was top 30 ATG. That eventually dropped to Top 50 before some grudgingly admitted that he was a HOF'er, not ATG.

It all depends on how you define an ATG. Virtually every fighter will have an asterisk against their name of some description. Hopkins has,Jones has, Mayweather has etc etc.
The most important thing is that people within the industry respect you as a fighter.

Its nigh on impossible for the vast majority of people in this forum to say with any great certainty how great the fighters of the 60's and 70's and before, without any evidence other than what the hacks around at that time wrote, the memories of those old enough to remember(who always see fighters of their era as superior) and the grainy low quality footage of their fights.

I think history will be kind to Calzaghe as he dominated his division for such a long time.
Time will tell, but as with the vast majority of long reigning champs he will get the respect he rightly deserves.

      Peace.

thats because he didnt beat a great fighter in that division. he had great fighters 1 or 2 divisions below or above him in their primes but decided to stay comfortable in a weak division.

like the earlier posts, marvin hagler isnt overrated, same with ricardo lopez, carlos monzon, salvador sanchez.

it all depends on how u do it. if u stay in one division or move around but fight great fights with good to great fighters.

by americans Joe Calzaghe is considered over-rated because he is brittish, because americans think that all fighters out of europe or britain is over-rated and will sadly never give them respect. imo Calzaghe is a great fighter but he is not an atg, he is a step below hopkins and roy jones. Americans though doesnt give him that they just say he is an over-rated bum because he is from the UK.

Yeah, despite the fact pretty much everyone here considers him the best super middleweight ever. We think he sucks though. Most people here completely agrees with your assessment of Calzaghe.

Dude. He is a good boxer.

But the division was a joke. On par with the HW Division.

If he wanted to stay in the SMW, fair enough, but he should have cleaned it up.

It took him 10 years to unify it.
he got his first belt from an old Eubank (who never won again). Got his second 9 years later from Lacy (we all know how good he was).
then beat Kessler in his last bout at SMW.

Sorry, but 10+ years as champ, and only those three names?

                  That's a joke.

Then he faced retiring old men Hopkins and RJJ who would do anything for a last payday. (More pointing at RJJ who was dangerously KO'd 5 years prior).

Oh, and btw im from UK. But that means nothing to be. Anyone who judges by race/colour/belief is nothing but a racist ******
