Yes, because the 4th fight is a semi final that you have to win to go through to the final, and losing all 3 league fights wouldn't get you through anyway. They may get through with 1 league win, then a semi final win, then a win in the final. So 3 out of 5 is the minimum amount of wins needed to win the tournament, and 2 out of 4 is the minimum to get to the final (unless there are a lot of draws but thats not going to happen).

I like it, it gives everyone a chance to lose and still come back straight away rather than slipping down the rankings and fighting their way back up as would normally happen.

That's impossible. Group level is 3 fights. Lose all 3 and you're out. If you somehow managed to advance to the semis with only one win then the third loss will come in the semis and then you're out.
