MANILA -- Negotiations are said to be underway for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight against World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Miguel Cotto. But people still can't stop talking about a dream match-up between the Filipino champ and former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Even Pacquiao fans in New York who spent a few moments with the Filipino boxing icon in an elevator asked him about the possible bout.
“The People’s Champ” was in New York City then to accept the 2008 Fighter of the Year Award from the Boxing Writers Association of America.
Dr. Allan Recto of PhilBoxing.com related in his “PacMan’s New York Trip” piece that a fan asked Pacquiao: “When will you fight ‘Money’ Floyd Mayweather?”
“Wearing dark sunglasses, the PacMan looked his way and managed to give out a smile,” Recto wrote in his article. “The PacMan replied teasingly, ‘He might kick my butt.’”
“Although he said it in jest, everyone inside the elevator disagreed,” said the boxing photojournalist.
“The fan from Florida exclaimed, ‘You’re gonna whip his *ss (behind) and I can’t wait to watch that!’ Laughter ensued,” Recto said.
Even former heavyweight champions Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield recently talked about a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.
“Whether or not he believes that or if the fight will even happen, we will have to wait and see, but I would like to see it,” Lewis told FightHype.com.
“Well, until you beat the guy, Pacquiao's the best and that's the thing. Floyd hasn't done that yet,” Holyfield noted.
Meanwhile, Recto also wrote that Pacquiao is set to go to the US on Monday or Tuesday for a series of Nike pictorials alongside NBA superstar and 2009 Finals Most Valuable Player Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers.
