Fernando Vargas / Victor Ortiz, so many similarities, one major difference...

    What would you call it?

    Brains or Balls...

Had that Maidana fight been allowed to continue, Victor Ortiz may have very well suffered the type of beating Tito administered to Vargas on that December night in 2000. Then there would be yet another similarity between the two Oxnard fighters.

Ortiz was not getting out of the 6th round. He was hammered in the back of the head before he went down. I think Ortiz still has some fight left in him. It just wasn't his night. I would not turn my back on this kid just yet, anyone who writes him off now, is an idiot. I am not a fan but I still respect the kid. He took more clean shots than I could have taken that's for damn sure.

If you can remember the last round of Trinidad vs Vargas... Fernando was getting beat the hell up. After two bad knockdowns he got up and continued to fight. Even after the last KD, Vargas was still trying to get up; Tito was murdering him, but Fernando had that "fire" that drove him to continue. A lot of experts, fans, critics will say that that fight may have caused permanent damage to Fernando. That "fire" is what made him stay in there and fight at all costs even when it was clear that he was not going to win the fight.

Does Ortiz lack the "fire" or is he just a smart man for knowing when he has been defeated and being able to cope with and accept that regardless of what the fans, promoters or HBO expect from him...

Oh hell yeah, I thought the fight was over in the first when he went down like a ton of bricks. He was hurt bad, I don't know how he recovered from that and did what he did in the second. For me that was his gut check; what would have occurred after the knockdown in the 6th round may have caused him permanent damage. He's a smart kid and hopefully he'll be back to avenge his loss and continue his path to stardom.

Maidana is no Tito and Ortiz is certainly no Vargas, but I'd thought of that fight, too - and that's why I think this could yet turn out to be a smart quit from Ortiz. His post-fight comments were a nightmare, though.

Same here, Vargas would have fought to the death in that fight, but I think he paid the price for it. I'm sure Ortiz is aware of the comparisons made between him and Fernando and that may have been a factor in his decision to not want to continue the war he was in this weekend.

that was pure annihilation from margo...the corner stops the fight...

this time around, the fighter calls it a day... and admitted it at the post fight.. he should have told his corner to do it for him next time..

Cotto didn't want anymore either. The hard evidence in my statement is the fact that he willingly took a knee twice without taking any serious shots and then nodding when his favorite uncle came up on the apron with a white towel, that's called "QUITTING".
