how many guys can test him though?

even if he is mentally weak......it won't show up except in tough pressure fights.

    he still can go far.

just keep him away from argentinians , colombians and nicaraguans. lol

Ortiz gave it his all, and came off second best. No shame in that. However unless there is drastic change in his attitude he isn't going to make it at the top. There are better fighters out there than the crude but big hitting Maidana. I don't think he likes getting hit, and that's a big problem.

Well, no-one likes getting hit to be honest...Not getting hit is the first thing up and coming boxers need to work on then offense..

he didn't give it his all in the end imo.

he did in the beginning. too much.

          i think he gassed.

there are better fighters than maidana but maybe those better fighters don't give ortiz as much problems. he just wasn't prepared for maidana rough style. he can do things to fix that. work the jab more , keep his hands up , don't over commit , learn how to clinch , etc.

i saw victor get frustrated from maidana trapping his arms in clinches.

Ortiz quiting was really bad for boxing.

I don't like the fact that he quit, but pisssing on dumb mexican nuthugers is still fun.

            Still he shouldn't have quit.

Well of course no one likes getting hit, but in boxing you have to deal with getting hurt every now and then...especially with Ortiz's style. His attitude after the fight was the total opposite you would expect from a young, talented, hungry fighter. He should have said, I'm going to go back to the drawing board, improve from the loss, and come back stronger. Instead he showed all the signs of a boxer who's heart isn't in it anymore and made out he was going to quit.

Golden Boy is just so desperate to promote someone who could be the next Oscar de la Hoya to the point that Ortiz must have gotten this "hype thing" into his head, distracting him in his preparations!

Ortiz is a brawler-puncher, he needs to develop more his defense...But he is good. He is still young. He can still be a world champion...but he needs to learn some lessons at this point in his career. I hope Golden Boy drop him and Top Rank takes him. Golden Boy is just desperate now for fighters who could earn for them more money that's why they hopelessly hype upcoming boxers like Ortiz.
Maybe, you make a good point but that's not everyone, I've seen people who weren't on his bandwagon calling him overhyped and exposed as a bum.

You're right though, HBO and GBP hyped him up too much.

Top Rank seem to be much better at developing fighters than GBP, they have a magnificent track record.

Well fighters will know how to test him now, pressure works against him, that's when he starts thinking about his situation and that's probably how most of his opponents will fight him from here on in, no matter where they're from.

He definitely has the skills to go far.

I agree coming on here is buzz kill at times after a great fight. We just saw two guys go at it in an action packed fight. Yet I see nothing but complaints on how Ortiz is a quitter etc. It's like we can't even enjoy the moment of a spectacular fight. It's not like he fought like a coward he was mixing it up in the line of fire the whole fight.

It's just when his eye closed, it was enough for him to end it. Why kill him for it?

                      Good post.

I tried sticking up for Ortiz last night but it's sort of futile in the face of so much crap. I find the mentality of some people on here extremely strange, in terms of the standards they expect every fighter to live up to.

Not every fighter can have the heart of an Ali, a Corrales, a Morales, etc.

                      It's all a little depressing.
