It just goes to show you how fragile life inside the ring can be, and how heavily it must weigh on the 3rd man in the ring.

You stop it too soon, and you're going to have everybody on your ass saying that it was premature, and you shouldn't have done it.

You wait just a tad too long, and you could possibly have a dead body on your hands.

      Definitely.

This is a good article on referees and what they go through in the ring if you're interested. It's a tough job.

        Damn, good looking out.

I was a bit bored, and I'm going to read that right now.

I'd never want to have to be in their shoes ; I'm much happier at home, drinking a beer and watching the fight from a safe distance.

Not to mention the occasional shot upside the head they take.

I was rewatching Whitaker/Mayweather the other day and I forgot how Pernell accidently belted the referee when he got too close.

I felt sorry for the referee that got knocked out in an amateur fight a few years back, dude fell like a bag of bricks. Referees historically have shown good chins though.

No problem. Bernard Fernandez is a good writer.

                Indeed the have.

Some of them even have some really slick moves, like Mercante, in the Holyfield/Lewis match.

Kinda makes you think about how they would've faired as Pro's, if they hadn't already tested the waters once.

Mercante was like a prime Whitaker that night.

                  Of course he is.

You know what paper he writes for, right?

He's been around the Philly boxing scene for a long time, I doubt the Daily News there would be the same without him.

That's why I'm so glad that you can read his articles online.

I left there a long time ago, and it'd suck not to be able to hear his opinions on things just because I don't live there anymore.
