I've yet to see Marquez's counter/combination punching prove to be effective against a defensive fighter/mover of the calibre of Willie Pep. He is never as good as the aggressor which he would have to be in order to catch Pep.

Pep used a low guard because he got away with it.

at one point or another you gotta realize that Pep didn't have a great punch. all that defense for no reason would not cut it against modern fighters. I'll agree to disagree, but this ain't the same sport now.

Ralph Walton was a punching bag with half a pulse, you can't compare what Pep could do against a bag to what he could do regularly against tough opponents.

These are all HOFers, world champions and top 10 contenders we are talking about.

During his peak years before the plane crash, he had seemingly developed quite a punch with very few men going the distance against him. Out of his last 9 fights before the accident, he scored KO wins in 8 of them.
