this is a classic case of OLD vs NEW. It just simply ain't the same sport as it was back then.

I've yet to see Marquez's counter/combination punching prove to be effective against a defensive fighter/mover of the calibre of Willie Pep. He is never as good as the aggressor which he would have to be in order to catch Pep.

Pep used a low guard because he got away with it.

The big difference between the sport now and then is the stricter refereeing. You can see it in the videos I posted about Marquez when he instantly gets warned for low blows or any other rough tactics.

The only men to beat Pep when he was close to his prime were Sandy Saddler and Sammy Angott, two notoriously dirty fighters who used clinching, hitting and holding, low blows, elbows, lacing to defeat Pep. This wouldn't have happened under today's officiating.
