What happened to the 15 round bout in boxing?

I wonder what and when exactly the change took place? Having 12 rounds makes it easier for a draw seeing how each fighter could win 6 rounds each. Why not have 13 rounds making it for a possible uneven round and less chance for a draw?.....Lefty

Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini v. Duk-Koo Kim, scheduled for 15 rounds for Mancini's WBA lightweight title belt. Ray W KO 14.
Kim dies 4 days later of injuries sustained in this bout
As a result of Kim's death, the WBC immediately ordered all title bouts be reduced from 15 to 12 rounds.

WBA and IBF soon followed suit, to protect fighters. 3 Knockdown Rule also came from this tragedy.

Truthfully you can get hurt with one punch either in the 1st round or the 15th round really no difference.....12 rounds 15 rounds I still think they should go with an uneven number of rounds like 13.....Lefty

I think 12 is plenty and if a round is even, call it even.

And if the fight is a draw, call it a draw.

Tradition I think. Distances was always 8, 10, 12 rounds for non-titlefights and 15 for championships. Still you're right. A bit odd that it isn't always an uneven number as it is in the AM's.

15 round fights were stopped because they tried to make the sport safer. It's reasonable as the fight goes on you tire more so your ability to block punches and evade them would diminish. Also accumulated damage.

                    12 rounds is enough.

                    edit.
