World titles of the 70ies (and earlier) were basically a local contest.
See it this way: Let's say I propose a current heavy the following:
- I take you back in a time machine to fight against the best fighters.
- There will be only 1 belt, so you will have it very easy by just winning 1x to be unified champ. Everyone will praise you as the undisputed Champ after winning 1 belt.
- There won't be too much television, so people will base their opinion mainly on some newspapers and hearsay about your greatness. Call your self "The Hardest" and people will believe it.
- Your average opponent will be some cruiser guy, around 180-190lbs. You will fight a lot of small opponents like 6'0'' and smaller.
- If you are RRRREALLY unlucky you might meet someone they call "Big", he will be as tall as 6'3.5'' and 217 lbs (Big George Foreman).
- The world population will be approx. only half as large as nowadays so you will have a lot less competition
- Eastern-European boxers will be nonexistent in pro-boxing. You will mainly fight Americans in America. You will mainly fight boxers who grew up in slums, had no modern nutrition and scientific training.
- AND BEST OF ALL: Whatever you do you will always remembered as "The Hardest", because even in 100 years there will be some people who get "happy mental flashes" when they watch old footage, preferrable in back/white.
THAT's the Golden Age of Boxing
Just the facts alone
- that now you need to win 4-5 belts to be undisputed champion
- that now the world population is 2x as big
- that now the boxing world is 2-3 as big
- that now the opponents are 20-30 lbs heavier
makes an undisputed world champion OF OUR TIMES approx. 20x-30x MORE WORTH THAN DURING ALI's TIMES.
What was your counter-argument again? Oh, "USA had the greatest boxers! Period! KNN sucks!"
"Muahahaha! He says 'Star Wars' is a good movie. What a freak! Humphrey Bogart was sooo much better than these modern fancy color movies"Last edited by knn; 06-20-2009, 03:38 PM.Comment

I thought boxing was the noble art of self defence, if you just want to see knock outs go online for unlicensed fights. You'll love them also a lot of white fighters in there too.

Question: why is this thread still being posted in? It's a moot point; the fight will proceed, hep notwithstanding...Comment
