Roach wants Mosley for Pacman, not Cotto

WHILE Manny Pacquiao wants a Nov. 14 fight against World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, trainer Freddie Roach appears to be pushing for World Boxing Association 147-pound champion Shane Mosley.
Standard Today, www.insidesports.ph and Viva Sports received a call from Gerry Peñalosa’s manager and Roach’s friend Billy Keane early Tuesday morning, saying that the trainer was trying desperately to contact Pacquiao.
“Roach doesn’t know whether Pacquiao is back in the Philippines or still in the US. He wants to discuss things with Manny before he makes a decision. Freddie thinks there could be a lot more money out there with Mosley, so he wants to talk to Manny and see that he makes the right amount of money,” said Keane.
Significantly, Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer branded as ridiculous Arum’s plan of a Pacquiao-Cotto fight, according to the Los Angeles Times. Schaefer also said Pacquiao should fight Mosley.
Schaefer reiterated what Mosley himself said earlier—he knocked out Antonio Margarito, who in turn knocked out Cotto last July. But Schaefer failed to mention that Cotto beat Mosley in 2007.
The Golden Boy executive pointed out that Cotto wanted to take a vacation after his split decision win over Joshua Clottey in a bout where he suffered a deep cut.
“Mosley is ready to go, he is the best fighter in that division,” said Schaefer.
Mosley previously sent out a press release claiming that Pacquiao agreed to fight him, which was denied by the Filipino camp, saying nobody had spoken to him about a fight.
In that release, Mosley said he was willing to drop down to a catch-weight of 144 pounds and give Pacquiao a 60-40 split of revenues.
“Mosley can punch more, he has more speed and he really wants this fight and is willing to make concessions. This is the fight people want,” Schaefer added.
Arum told Standard Today after returning to Las Vegas from New York that he would start negotiations with the Cotto people on Monday and they would consider other options, including Mosley if he cannot get the Cotto fight done this November.
