Rewatching it, I feel Clottey's defensive comfortablity laying on the ropes, letting Cotto waste energy while blocking most shots, actually cost him a few rounds and possibly the fight. While it was a great defensive display, it was also comprised of 15-20 second stretches where Clottey let Cotto swing vicious looking punches, landing a couple, and winning momentum and the round by sheer activity.
The cut hurt Cotto, and Clottey made it close, but really he was a few tweaks away from taking the fight. If not for the knockdown it would've be a different scoring outcome all-together. I think he might've got a draw easily.
In a rematch I might even favor Clottey. He showed he belongs at the top of the division.

rewatching it now IMO there was a larger margin early for cotto .
first watch i had it 114-114
second i had it clottey 114-113
only differents was i scored the tenth a 10-10
first time then changed it to clottey 10-9 second look.
