Nobody told me what happened at the Garden, I was there, also I saw the fight in HBO next day and still believe in my mind and my heart that Cotto was the winner. His writer that waste his breath in this article probably is using Cotto's left eye, which was difficult to see during the fight due to a lot of blood pouring in his eye. I have read a lot of smart writer, all of them had Cotto winning this fight, but this writer and some that hate Cotto said that Clottey won this fight. The only Clottey won was the best actor when faking a lot of pain and needed the help of the referee and when started limping, just looking for the referee to disqualify Cotto. Many of the remaining rounds were close and when it was over, judge Don Trella (116-111) and John McKaie (115-112) had it for Cotto while Tom Miller had it for Clottey (114-113). ESPN.com had it 116-111 for Cotto. AP 115-112 Cotto, Dan Rafael 116-112 Cotto. I have Cotto winning this fight 115-112. But this writer partially blind due to the hate to Cotto. Next time, probably in November 14, 2009 we will see Cotto vs Pacquiao, let see that the haters need to say about it. I know wil be a tough fight, but I think Cotto at the end will be with the arm all the way up.
“Fighting Words” Cotto-Clottey: The Close Makes The Man

The fight left me with more questions than answer and who won the fight is not one of those questions. Boxing has been plague with questionsable decisions from Oscar, to Mosley to Mayweather (to name a few) have been involved in decisions that are still debated. But we forget and move one.... if Cotto redeems himself in the next bout, a few years from now people will only talk about his victory against Clottey. If he loses his next boubt, then people will only talk about the gift he receive at the Garden.
But the questions that are about Cotto's performace. Was it a direct result of:
- change of corner
- Eye injury
- Margacheato Post Effect
- Joshua is a hell of fighter
- Or a combination of all!
Joshua was in the perfect position. He had what seem to be damage goods (Margo Beating), new corner (first time without his uncle), and an injured fighter (no matter what you say, the gash changed the game plan) and yet was not able to take the last two rounds decisively. For this I give credit to Cotto.
But I have to admit that I'm concern about his performace and he has to make certain that he improves from this one. I'm still question the fact that he has an unproven guy running his corner ( he needs to get a Teacher, someone that will build him a game plan and refine his techniques will working on his weaknesses) not someone that will do the same old and make him feel comfortable.
However I would add to the list of things that might have affected Cotto's performance is Joshua Clottey's boxng style. His style could create problems to any boxer at 147 and 154, where I beleive can win also.
However I must say something about Cotto, he could had easily choose the easy way out at round 6 or 7, when asked by the doctors if he was okay. He could easily complain and say he was not seeing very well, which was obvious, and the fight would had been stopped while he was clearly in front in the cards.
The fact that he choose to continue fighting under those circumstances and knowing that he would win easily, if the fight would had been stopped, says a lot about Cotto and shuts up all the people that were calling him a quiter.
That's the kind of warrior people like to see and even though decisions like that and not winning to clinch in the ring may hurt him, it's what makes Cotto so special for the old school boxing fans.Comment
