Miguel cotto: Some concerns

Clottey is in the top 5 of WWs, no doubt...never been knocked down, let alone hurt; SO, if Cotto is mentally missing something, still recovering from the Margarito fight, fought 9 rounds with a blinding gash; AND still won....That performance will shut up his most outrageous fans who now see what most of us always knew: you can't last in the sport of boxing if you get hit that much on a regular basis. Terminator who? Cotto looks very beatable. These people are now busy getting rid of gifs, crying and looking out for another nut sack to hang on too because there's no terminator left in Cotto.
Yeah, he's done, it's over for him, he's a gatekeeper now...COME ON, he beat Clottey (a Clottey with two good hands at that)Last edited by Boricua6; 06-14-2009, 10:14 AM.Comment

I had cotto winning 3 and 11 thats where our cards differMy scorecard, based on 1st viewing:
I had Clottey winning that opening round, but a KD has to be counted. Some of those later rounds (10th and 11th) could've gone either way, but I didn't see anything effective by Cotto.Code:JC || 8 | 9 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 9 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 9 || 115 MC || 10 | 10 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 10 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 10 || 112
Round 3 cotto hit a lot of gloves, but did some good body work and powered some shots through the gloves, clottey landed a couple of uppercuts, but barely threw any punches in the round and was outworked, and round 11 clottey just hit a lot of air and again cotto mainly landed body shots and some jabs, but its all subjectiveComment

Um... To Cotto's credit, he did have that huge gash and fought with one eye for basically the entire fight against a very, very underrated opponent. He looked like he was in trouble a few times while he was eating shots but always came back, almost reminded me of Marquez.
Stop the hate. The guy proved himself last night, not the opposite. So did Clottey, if you forget about the last 2 rounds...

I think it's a mix. He has the symptoms of a shot fighter. Too much guts i guess. I think he won some of his fights not on class but on pure guts. He's definitely slower than he used to be despite training his ass off. Clottey is good but he is not active enough. Even then he won the fight as many saw including compubox. An american would have won, Clottey is from Ghana, too bad for him... Anyway back to Cotto, he showed a very vulnerable side. I think it's a bit physical too. I've never seen anyone recuperate from that, look at Hatton for instance or Wanderley Silva in mma (he's Cotto for mma, the future of Cotto maybe (hope not)) so i think it's not just mental. No trainer, no diet, no change of camps can even significantly make a fighter recuperate from those symptoms in my experience... I hope Cotto proves me wrong though.Comment

Yeah I hope cotto comes back strong, and I think he can but he has to overcome this mental block, even if he doesn't he will still be a top level operator and tough for anyone, you have to remember clottey presents problems that 99% that other ww's wouldn't for cotto, but to have a chance to beat the likes of a mayweather or pac (which I think was a possibility before margs) he has to be like the old Miguel.I think it's a mix. I agree clottey doesn't have the work rate but he is very strong in other areas. I also would not put too much faith in compubox in that fight, I thought it was off, it was too hard for the human eye to tell whether punches were on the gloves or hitting the target, and that goes for both fighters. You had to just score the rounds and unfortuantely for clottey he threw the last 2 rounds away which on my card lost him the decision.Comment

This is not a hate thread I am a big fan of his, it is an open discussion of things I have seen from him which I didn't like to see. I hope it was the cut, or clottey's style, but I fear it is something more.Um... Yeah I am furious about this whole thing, I found out on thursday that no one from cotto's camp checked margs wraps and vice versa before their fight, now wonder he fired his uncle! Obviously you never expect someone to cheat at such a high level of the sport, but talk about ******ity.Comment

he did look different, but thats not necessarily a bad thing. hes usually this animal who looks to give his oponents a beatdown, hes not gon do that to clottey..
he knew he couldnt hurt clottey so he didnt fight his usual fight, it was a testament to him being multidimensional rather than washed up imo. thats said i acctually think clottey beat him, and even if i didnt it was clottey who gave it away and not cotto who won it. he didnt look great but it might just be a case of a bad styles matchup, or clottey is just the better fighter (and always has been).Comment
