First off Cotto should definitely be given credit for his level of opposition for the last couple of years, he is forming a great resume as he gets older. As for the fight I had him winning 114-113 the kd making the difference. Make no mistake clottey is a handful for anyone, I have thought for a while now he is one of the best 3 or 4 wel. in the world. He is strong and fast, and big, an absolute monster at the weight.
I have to say though, I am slightly concerned about cotto...I can't quite put my finger on it, but I noticed it in the jennings fight and last night, its not that he is damaged goods but mentally he still seems affected by the tko. It could have been the cut but for me its something deeper, he isn't quite throwing everything into his punches, its like he is holding back, not fully committed to his shots and it has made him a touch slower. Its very subtle but it is there, it seems to me that he is thinking about and anticipating the shots that might come back. Its like he has lost his mojo a little bit, and maybe he needs a trainer to instill his full confidence back. I thought it was in my head, but having watched some of the pre-margarito fights and even the marg fight he definitely seemed a more assured and authoritive fighter.
Anyway he is still a tremendous fighter regardless, but I hope I will see the old cotto back because in my eyes he isn't quite there yet. I think there is some self doubt there, and it nearly cost him last night I thought he was there for the taking but clottey lacked the killer instinct.
What do you guys think, have any cotto fans noticed this?
