  • Atlas Says Clottey Dropped The Ball, Could Have Won

Joshua Clottey is complaining of a robbery. He says the judges robbed him of a title-winning decision on Saturday night in New York’s Madison Square Garden. WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto was able to overcome a serious cut above his left eye to edge Clottey by way of a split-decision. Teddy Atlas, known trainer and television broadcaster for ESPN’s Friday Night Fights series, says it was Clottey who gave the fight away. He felt Clottey held victory in his hands and he let it slip through his grasp. [details]

Cotto was fighting the curse of Atlas too, and overcame it.

    Cong**** on two wins tonight!

    The curse almost devoured Cotto.

    Great fight!

It wouldn't have mattered anyway. Even if he won the last round he still would have lost on the judges score cards.

whatever they say, clottey wins the heart of the fans. i was rooting for cotto but cotto is not the same. he simply lost. what i can't understand is clottey losing 116-111 in one of the judges.

this is shame. that is why mma is fast catching boxing because there is no robbery in mma, not in a shameful way. cotto is clearly the loser in this fight but he won according to the blind judges.

        shameeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Clottey lost the fight by doing f all in the last 3 rounds. Cotto didn't win, Clottey lost it.

the challenger was suppose to put alot of pressure to the champion to get the belt..
the nasty gash was there for the taking..what did clottey do? stands at the corner

a KD on the first round..gameness all throughout the fight with a nasty gash at that.
a clear win imho...**** the robbed/gift debate !

fight decisions isnt based on thrown/landed percentage. so stop that crap.

again a clear win for cotto

I agree, Clottey lacked the killer instinct, should have gone all-out after round 8. What he did was to chase Cotto especially in rounds 11 and 12, but when he did, he just put his hands up, just got hit. Funny, he chased Cotto just to be defensive, he did not train for an all-out offensive, he did not know what to do when the cake was there.

my opinion josh clottey pulled the winky wright. he hurt his chances to win by not fighting the last 2 rounds regardless of the judging. clottey could've won this fight. this is his fault.

I have to agree with the bulk of posters so far and even with Atlas. Clottey has to suck it up and continue the aggresion he was showing leading up to the final rounds and he just stopped. Cotto's punches weren't hurting him at that point and all he had to do was keep busy and he failed at that. It's a shame that Cottey let this one slip away.
