ROY JONES JR fears he could die at the hands of Joe Calzaghe in next weekend's Battle of the Superpowers.
The four-weight world champion has been having nightmares about the damage the undefeated Welshman is capable of inflicting in the Madison Square Garden showdown.
Jones admitted: "If I lose, I lose - and when I get in the ring, there is that chance I could get killed."
Jones knows the dangers of boxing. He is a friend of Gerald McClellan, who was left in a wheelchair and blind after losing a savage battle with Nigel Benn in London in February 1995.
The American will not visit McClellan, believing it would make him quit boxing.
Jones said: "Every fighter is close to that every time they go in the ring. It can happen any time. You don't know when it could.
"We're not out there to kill each other but to do the best we can. My momma told me to stop fighting but I just can't seem to stop yet."
And now the American legend will take his record of 52 wins from 56 fights into the ring after months of watching Calzaghe throw punches in his sleep.
He explained: "Fighting Joe makes you get up. When you sleep at night you dream about him punching.
Ahead
"You lay down in bed and think, 'Oh goodness, I got to be doing something because he's punching right now'.
"When you wake up in the morning you say, 'Oh gosh, I'm hours behind, he's probably been up for an hour already'.
"You got to get out of bed as you know he's somewhere punching and training. You got to get up and go if you're going to keep up. You have to get up at 4am to keep ahead of him."
When Jones won his first world title in May 1993, outpointing Bernard Hopkins to become IBF middleweight champ, Calzaghe was an amateur.
Just 18 months later Jones took the IBF super- middleweight crown on points from James Toney and was considered the best pound- for-pound boxer on the planet.
When Jones moved up to light-heavyweight he was untouchable, making 11 world title defences - but next weekend will be his toughest yet.
