Bowe and Newman were pimping HBO and making millions fighting soft touches.

It was a prelude to what other fighters after Bowe have been criticized for doing.

Bowe fought Dokes, Ferguson, and a supposedly shot Holyfield.

Bowe also probably realized he would have to train really hard and cut down his eating if he were to fight Lewis, and didn't want to do that.

That being said the fight might've ended up happening anyway, but Bowe lost to Holyfield in the rematch, and Lewis lost to McCall a year after that.
