Dawson did the right thing, but the IBF was also right to enforce its own rules, considering that Cloud had been a mandatory for a whole year. OTH I agree there's a strong case to say Cloud shouldn't have been made a mandatory in the first place, given his weak résumé, but should have had to face Woods or Diaconu in an eliminator first. But he was made one, and he therefore deserves his shot at the title. If he beats Woods, he can fight Dawson next, and that would then be a big fight, which it isn't now.You and I know Dawson was feeling the pressure from the media and the fans of needing to rematch Glen Johnson. IMO that fight comes first before anything else for Dawson, even if it meant dropping the IBF belt. Dawson did the right thing and Cloud does not deserve the IBF strap in the way he's getting it.
That's exactly why mandatories are necessary - without them, big names would fight only big names, and those prospects who don't get much press but who have genuine class would never get a shot.
And I love the "your boy" bit - ИATAS206 was arguing for the necessity of mandatory system, he is not a Cloud fan as such.Comment

Tavoris Cloud is a bum. He is so musclebound that after five to six rounds he's out of steam. This showed even in the one sided beating he dealt a faded Julio Gonzalez. I can understand his argument about not getting a title shot with Dawson but I can totally agree with Dawson's point of view. A rematch with Johnson is a bigger money fight and much more appealing to the fans. Dawson would destroy Cloud. Tarver would smash Cloud. Johnson would do the same. Everyone is Ring's top ten would punish Cloud. Including Clinton Woods who now will get the opportunity to do it. Hopefully we can see that fight on ESPN or something.Comment

He is a Cloud fan, he is defended him in numerous post, it's not an insult, Klitschko fans call me that when I defend Dawson and Chambers. I agree mandatories are necessary, that's how the rules have always been. But the IBF should tell Dawson about his status before hand. If Dawson knew about the rules he wouldn't have been reluctant to sign a deal and fight Glen Johnson. The IBF SHOULD HAVE NOT stripped Dawson of his title. I'm not ruling out mandatories but the IBF never enforced Dawson to fight Cloud until the last minute. The sanctioning bodes and their rules are too strict and unfair.Dawson did the right thing, but the IBF was also right to enforce its own rules, considering that Cloud had been a mandatory for a whole year. I've only seen the man fight one time. I mentioned a while back that I thought a Could vs Dawson would be a great match to watch, then once I learned Cloud was Chad's mandatory I've defended Cloud's right several times, being that rules are rules and it's much better when the organization forces their mandatories like they should, then say allow a fighter, ::cough:: mayweather ::cough::, to fight for years without ever fighting a mandatory!!!
As bad as the system is at times, at least it IS a system. And the more enforced it is the better. We cannot just allow every fighter to fight whomever they want, whenever they want, there must be rules and fighters who work their way up deserve a shot, regardless if they are popular or now (besides, how else are stars born!? I can list countless names that only made it big by becoming someones mandatory in the first place).
Actually they were quite flexible with Chad, being that Cloud was made his mandatory over a year ago. Chad wanted (or had) to rematch Tarver because of the rematch clause, the IBF was fine with it as long as Chad fought Cloud after, which he doesn't want to do. It's chad's choice if he wants to fight Johnson, just like it's Clouds right to a title shot and the IBF's right (imo obligation) to enforce the rules. But the IBF should tell Dawson about his status before hand. The problem with is that it's a system in the first place. The sanctioning bodies does not need to be a system, it just needs to have some rules and guidelines and need to be less strict. And you're contradicting yourself, you say it's a bad system, but you think it's okay that's it's enforcing rules in a manner that's de****able, they were never like this before. I remember last year the WBC enforced Dawson to fight mandatory Adrian Diaconu, Dawson didn't do it, and he was stripped of his title, I agree with the WBC on that part. But I don't agree with the IBF because Dawson had a rematch clause in place which messed everything up, even the IBF bended their rules to allow the rematch to happen when he was suppose to fight Tavoris Cloud after he Tarver for the first time. And the IBF certainly wasn't being flexible, if they were, they would of given Dawson an option not to fight Tarver again.I've only seen the man fight one time. I think Dawson fighting Johnson instead of Cloud at this time is absolutely fine.
Both Dawson and Cloud are young and will fight soon enough. Johnson on the other hand isn't getting any younger and I think it's super cool of Chad to give him the rematch. You don't see many guys lining up to fight Glen Johnson.
Cloud on the other hand is a young fighter who has been sitting on the shelf for a year waiting for his title shot.
His best win is an old Julio Gonzalez. It's sad that he hasn't been active since then and I don't think it's good for his career.
Also, Cloud has NOT been Dawson's IBF mandatory for over a year. Dawson only picked up the IBF belt when he beat Tarver. He had to drop the WBC belt in order to unify with Tarver in October.
Shaw offered to put Cloud on the HBO undercard of Dawson-Johnson II and promised to fight him next (a few months later), provided both fighters won.
HBO exposure would have been good for Cloud, but he turned it down in favour of a quicker title shot.
So Cloud can go fight Woods and get his title shot for small money and little exposure in the meantime.
I have nothing against Cloud, and look forward to him fighting Dawson in the future, but I think he made the wrong decision in this case.Comment

I remember last year the WBC allowed Dawson for another voluntary defense as long as he fought Adrian Diaconu after he beat Glen Johnson, I couldn't see why the IBF didn't allow something like that. Both the WBC and IBF are pathetic though.I think Dawson fighting Johnson instead of Cloud at this time is absolutely fine.

What some people fail to realize is that Chad could've fought Cloud instead of Tarver after he beat him the first time. Of course that rematch probably still would have been in the way, but Dawson had a choice to either get his mandatory out of the way or fight a rematch with Tarver right after which he did. The stipulation to the rematch clause was a two fight option. I give Chad Dawson his props for giving Johnson the rematch he deserves and I don't rip him for vacating his strap to let Cloud fight for it. But that doesn't mean that I'm dismissing Cloud as a live challenger to Dawson down the line if Chad happens to beat Johnson again, which of course you already know by my posts he didn't do the first time in my opinion. The problem with is that it's a system in the first place. The sanctioning bodies does not need to be a system, it just needs to have some rules and guidelines and need to be less strict.
