Calzaghe and Dawson: a double standard about fighting old opponents

Dawson isnt nearly as highly regarded as Calzaghe is, nor is he far along in his career with 20 title defences. hes more or less in the mid-early stage of his career still.
also, notice that Calzaghe never gave Hopkins a rematch(they had a first controversial fight), while Dawson is giving Glen a rematch(they had a first controversial fight).
also notice that Calzaghe chose to fight Roy Jones, while Dawson chose to fight the men who badly knocked out Roy Jones.Comment

Your points about Dawson are fair, but who has said Dawson didn't deserve a fight with Calzaghe? Of course he did, but the guy had been planning his retirement for ages, and it just wasn't big enough fight at that point to motivate him to postpone his already planned retirement at that time. That's all. Not a case of being undeserving at all, and Calzaghe always made clear that if he had decided to continue, Dawson would have been his next fight. Both Calzaghe and Dawson always showed great respect for each other.Comment

I was hoping Calzaghe would postpone his retirement to fight Dawson, and all Calzaghe fans who are genuine boxing fans also hoped he would; but I respected the fact that he couldn't motivate himself enough to postpone his retirement for that fight, when he was 36, and Dawson, though a very good and possibly a great fighter, hadn't yet broken into the mainstream. But if anyone deserved a fight at that time it was Dawson.Last edited by Dave Rado; 05-30-2009, 03:19 PM.Comment

As much as I don't respect Calzaghe for wasting a lot of his career fighting second-rate opponents in Wales, I have zero interest in a Calzaghe-Dawson fight. Every quality that Chad has, Calzaghe does it better. Calzaghe has better hand speed, a better chin, more heart, and he is more aggressive. The fight may go the distance but Calzaghe would dominate Chad Dawson. Dawson's tendancy to take whole rounds off in fights would spell doom for him. And once Dawson lost, those are the same exact reasons why Joe wouldn't get credit for the victory.Comment

Why do people even think it was a controversial fight between Hopkins & Calzaghe?? I didn't know a clinchfest equaled to a win for the other guy. Must be sore American fans who hate losing to Brits.Comment

Interesting how Joe Calzaghe took so much abuse on this forum for fighting two old fighters, Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr.
Chad Dawson will now have FOUR fights in a row against 40 year olds, but the same people who were so hard on Calzaghe are not saying anything - in fact they are making excuses for Dawson.
The age 26 Dawson dropped TWO titles to avoid mandatories with prime opponents (Adrian Diaconu and Tavoris Cloud) in order to fight 40 year olds. As well, he avoided Diaconu in June 2007 and fought clubfighter Jesus Ruiz, and again avoided him early in 2008 to take the first fight with Johnson.
Calzaghe was old himself, he had been an amateur in the late 80s and pro since the early 90s and now is retired, while Dawson is in his 20s.
Why did Calzaghe take so much criticism, while Dawson gets away with it? I'm sure for pointing this out, I will receive a lot of criticism myself - but no one said much about those like bsrizpac who expressed their extreme displeasure with Calzaghe day after day in this forum .
Is there a double standard?
Because Dawson is a American, thats whyComment
