I agree. However, only haters criticise him for taking the Hopkins fight on the basis of Hopkins' age - he was still ranked P4P #3 and was the lineal Light Heavyweight champion. And all fair-minded fans would also have allowed him a glamour fight against Jones )although from a legacy point of view the Jones fight was meaningless) - if he had fought a more meaningful fight after it.

But Dawson still has many fights ahead of him, so their situations aren't comparable.

The fair and non-hater criticism of Calzaghe is that after Jones, he should have had one more fight, against either Dawson or Hopkins. Although I'm a Calzaghe fan, I wish he'd fought Dawson before he retired. It would certainly have enhanced Calzaghe's legacy, and would have silenced all of his non-hater critics. (The haters are irrelevant because they aren't rational).

WHEN DID ROY CLOWN A SHOT FIGHTER????????????????

Suck on that a while before you answer.

Ali clowned mofos..but at least Holmes had the home-training not to showboat him once he was SHOT.

Chavez talked enough **** to fill a septic tank...

        yet..

Willie Wise didn't showboat the guy when he was GONE.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Eubank past it by the time he fought Joe?

Chad Dawson will now have FOUR fights in a row against 40 year olds, but the same people who were so hard on Calzaghe are not saying anything - in fact they are making excuses for Dawson.

The age 26 Dawson dropped TWO titles to avoid mandatories with prime opponents (Adrian Diaconu and Tavoris Cloud) in order to fight 40 year olds. As well, he avoided Diaconu in June 2007 and fought clubfighter Jesus Ruiz, and again avoided him early in 2008 to take the first fight with Johnson.

Calzaghe was old himself, he had been an amateur in the late 80s and pro since the early 90s and now is retired, while Dawson is in his 20s.

Why did Calzaghe take so much criticism, while Dawson gets away with it? I'm sure for pointing this out, I will receive a lot of criticism myself - but no one said much about those like bsrizpac who expressed their extreme displeasure with Calzaghe day after day in this forum .

            Is there a double standard?
i'm not a JC fan, but dawson is an up and comer and has barely made a dent in the boxing world while calz could've been making huge fights for the fans for a while now.

No, he was past his peak but was fast from past it. And he was only 31.

dawson has FOUR fights, but TWO of the four are rematches- 1 rematch he was contractually obligated, the other rematch has been in demand by a lot of posters on here.....even tho dawson clearly won the first fight w/ johnson, and will beat him easier the second time, b/c he'll fight smarter.

calzaghe got **** b/c roy and hopkins weren't the same fighters they used to be, and add to that calzaghe won a disputed decision over the latter, then was afraid to grant him a rematch.

the bottom lines is, the two 40 y.o.'s dawson fought, were better representations of themselves than the 2 calzaghe fought.
