This is a funny thread. Just my opinion, and I am definitely no childhood neuroligist, but I don't see this as a big deal. I remember fighting with gloves when I was a kid, my uncle was a martial artist and he always had gloves laying around and ****. Me and my cousin would scrap. Not to mention, I had an older brother who use to kick my ass as well for years. By the way, I graduated one of the top in my class with a double major and a minor in college and I've noticed no ill effects. (I also trained MMA and boxing throughout college and boxed in the amateurs by the way).
To take one example, competitive youth soccer is clearly worse for a developing brain than an occasional, controlled light sparring match (imo).Last edited by Drunken Cat; 05-28-2009, 07:22 PM.Comment

You could be right but If you grow up around something, it may seem cruel to someone else but normal to others. In the Philippines it is common to see kids duke it out much harsher than that.Just because you went through hell growing up does not mean your kids do too. You may have been taught the hard way growing up, and that's fine. I mean look at you now, you're living your life the way you want it.
I was lucky. I moved out of the ****** when I was seven, but that did not mean I wasn't disciplined. Being of Mexican descent, I'm sure any Mexican's on here can agree they've had their fair share of el sinto o horache.
Two kids playing or not, obviously they're going to continue to "play fight", seeing as how that isn't their first time at it. At that age, constant blows to the head is not a good thing. It's just common sense. I mean he managed to buy gloves, why not buy some head gear? Oh wait they don't make headgear for four and five year olds.
The point is there are safer alternatives until they are old enough, and have a better developed skull structure to be able to take punches, like a punching bag for example. Let them wail out on that instead of each other.
Keep calling me a ***** but I'm just being realistic, and quite honestly the only sake you guys have for the argument is to defend and justify your actions as a "good" parent. They may be featherfisted but their power is proportionate to their age, weight, etc.
Even old momas do it.
This was just funny.

I have to ask, what's your opinion of competitive youth soccer? How about pee wee football?
I don't oppose using protective measures such as headgear, however I feel that a lot of people are blowing this out of proportion.Comment
