I think it was a ton of events culminating in his win over Cotto
1. Mexico was looking for a big star. Barrera and Morales were at the end of their runs while JMM wasn't quite the star they had hoped for. People see a guy who will take punches to land their own and they gravitated
2. his management. They did a **** up job keeping Tony in the spotlight while his promoter caught up with what people had been saying, that Tony could be a big star if promoted right. The smartest thing Arum did was put him in easy after PWill beat him as it made him look like a monster and was talk about as such and then taking the Cintron rematch and shining. Here finally we have a Mexican rival to Cotto's Puerto Rican pride!
3. his record. He basically fought anyone and short of Clottey and PWill, who both have never been hurt or knocked down, KO'd everyone they put in front of him.
4. he had always sold well. He sold out HDC (8000) fighting an unknown in PWill, drew steady crowds even for small events like his fight with Manuel Gomez (about 4500 compared to Mosleys paltry 2000 against Collazo). I think he and his fans were just waiting for his chance
and something I want to mention about PPV. While for the most part PPv can be an indication that your star power is something it is also used by promoters when the fighter in question has outgrown regular TV pay.
case in point. You could have made a case for Cotto vs Judah (or Mosley for that matter) being on regular HBO but the purses demanded for both wouldn't have allowed for them to be on regular HBO. Sometimes its not about what you draw moreso than what you demandComment
