Naito Rises From Canvas To Outlast Zhao Zhong

By Jake Donovan - Never question the heart of a champion, least of all that of Japan’s Daisuke Naito.

Perhaps the most overlooked of all lineal champions, 34-year old Naito successfully defended his flyweight crown for the 5th time with a unanimous decision win over China’s Xiong Zhao Zhong on Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan.

    Scores were 114-111, 114-110 and 113-111.

There was nothing easy about the win, with Naito (35-2-2, 22KO) forced to recover from a sixth round knockdown as well as cuts over both eyes to rally back and hang on for the win.

Both fighters weighed in at the flyweight limit of 112 lb. [details]

Didn't expect this to be that tough a fight for Naito.

I'm really not sure what path Kameda is looking to take should he win in Mexico, I don't see him having a chance against Naito.

Naito struggled at home against an inexperienced opponent who had beaten only one fighter with a winning record (1-0) in his career. This never should have been sanctioned as a legitimate title defense, and yet Naito had trouble. He's been bottom-feeding the past few years and an aging Pong will probably beat him next time out

I want to make sure I'm reading this correctly...

You don't think he has a chance of getting a fight with Naito, or a chance at beating him?

I can see a case for the former, but believe Kameda wins and with room to spare if/when they ever fight. Naito's solid, but it's not unreasonable to suggest he (along with several other top flyweights not named Donaire) are on the slide.

Winning. It's also not unreasonable to suggest that Kameda simply isn't that good. I see a 2-3 pt. decision for Naito if/when it happens. The flyweight division is pretty wide open right now though.

What did Zhao Zhong do to earn his shot?

As far as I can tell, nothing on his resume indicates that he was even top 50, but perhaps I'm overlooking something?

Here is something intersting to read about Naito:
                http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Human:14674

                He faced Wonjongkam 4 times

1st fight: he lost by KO in the 1st round in just 34 sec, quickest title KO in the division

2nd fight: Lost by KO in the 7th round

3rd fight: He won by UD, after 5 year he first challenged Wonjongkam.

4th fight: He won him UD

but it amazing that he wanted to fight him this many times even after he been KO pretty quick in his first fight.

I gotcha. I agree, Kameda could very well by more hype than substance. I like what I see from him, though and also grant him somewhat of a learning curve. He's been fighting what, 5-6 years so far? It remains to be seen whether or not he will improve, whereas it's fairly obvious that we've already seen the best of Naito. But no doubt, the division is wide open.

you could've also read all of that in the report posted in this very thread. It was only 500 words.

That said, your info is off - the 2nd fight was a technical decision and the fourth fight was a draw.

Told ya you should've read my report instead =)
