I think you're right. Boxing fan or not, everyone seems to know Ali and Tyson. The same can't be said for De la Hoya; not in the UK anyway.

Majority of general public today might not. The fact is that they transcended the sport during the time they fought in.

Dempsey was as popular or even more popular than Babe Ruth. He was one of the first to generate millions of dollars in any sport.

Jack Johnson's fights incited race riots around the country in which people were killed.

Joe Louis knocked out the German Max Schmeling in one of the biggest fights of all time at a time when the world was at war.
