Jet LI:
When Li was eight his talent for wushu was noticed at a summer course at school, and he began his practice there. Li participated in the sport of wushu in the non-sparring event. He began his wushu on the Beijing Wushu Team, an athletic group organized to perform martial arts forms during the All China Games. As a member of the team, he received wushu training and went on to win fifteen gold medals and one silver medal in Chinese wushu championships. According to Li, once, as a child, when the Chinese National Wushu Team went to perform for President Richard Nixon in the United States, he was asked by Nixon to be his personal bodyguard. Li replied, "I don't want to protect any individual. When I grow up, I want to defend my one billion Chinese countrymen!" which earned him much respect in his homelaComment

Jesus Christ. Wu Shu is a demonstration art. Li is a master at it.
He has had no fighting tournament wins. Just tournaments in WU SHU. Learn what Wu Shu is.
And before you whine about the thread, take the time to read what I'm saying. I'm not calling Bruce Lee a fraud. I'm saying you can't rate him as a fighter since he never FOUGHT or fougth anyone legit. I mean some street scuffles are greata and all, but a lot of people have had those.
The real question is, if you think Bruce Lee could beat EVERY BOXER EVER, do you think WONG JACK MAN could do that same?
How about any random Kung Fu master? Aikido master?
These arts have not been proven in LIVE combat in the modern era (the early UFC, SHOOTO and pancrase events showed the weakness of NO SPARRING LIVE which most of these core arts do not do).
But hey, ignore my logic and research and just accept the movie fights you see as real. Fine by me.Comment

mixed martial arts is trying incorporate different striking and graplling styles into one.
that first started out with the luta livre guys from brazil.
they were tired of getting their asses kicked brazilian jiu-jitsu (judo) guys and all these boxers , wrestlers , capoeira and kickboxers got together and started training together to fight the bjj guys.
this was in the 30's , 40's , 50's , man.
bruce lee didn't invent mma.Comment

Wrong. MMA came from all over the world:
Brazil (Vale Tudo/BJJ/Luta Livre)
Japan/Usa (catch as can, pro wrestling, hooking, catch wrestling styles)
Greece (Pankration)
Indian subcontinent (Pelwahni mixed wrestling).
But you are right, it is ******ed to say MMA or NHB came from Bruce lee.Comment

He appreciated them but he died before he could really study them.
He sparred with Gene Lebell and got completely handled- a fact his nut brigade will forget.
He DID not understand grappling. However, it is wrong for you to say he wasn't at least curious and hadn't THOUGHT about it.
He did tend to prefer stand up tactics more but you can see grappling ideals in there (notes in Tao of Jeet kun do)
i know he got schooled several times by grappling guys. was it gene lebell the one? were there others?Comment

I have heard different accounts from "Bruce LOVED grappling and would have incorporated it" (jockriders) to "Bruce tended to hate grappling but was aware of it" (haters).
I think he was aware of it but was not comfortable with it (in between). He might have incorporated it but we'll never know. He SAID he was open minded so it's not crazy to assume he would have dug it, but in practice you are right it seemed he understood the ranges of stand up fighting much better.Comment
