Beatin Oscar back then means way more then beating Margarito at the time. Oscar was a 6 weight champion and the sports biggest draw and a champion at 154 at the time. Add to this Floyd would make over $10,000,000 more to fight him, a title in a 5th weight class, become a mainstream attraction.

Simply put only a dumbass would have fought Margarito over De la Hoya at the time.

he was a champion at 147 since 2002.

oscar was at the end of his career and barely fighting.

oscar handpicked the 154 belt to make his fight with floyd a championship fight and to make it a bigger fight. mayorga pretty much was set up to win that vacant belt so he can lose it to oscar.
