Will Floyd get any bonus points for the weight disadvantage of Shane and Cotto?

Mate you missing the whole point being made ,,, he is not fighting 135 lbers , he is fighting a guy that weighs 144 on the night and he weighs 147 Floyd was himself a 135lb weigh-in fighter and was 143 stepping in , its all relative ,, this is not hard to understand !!Comment

no... believe me.. i understand the point.... he is asking a guy that fights at 130-135 at weigh in (140-145 fight night ) to take on someone that fights at 144 -147 at weigh in (150-154 fight night)Mate you missing the whole point being made ,,, he is not fighting 135 lbers , he is fighting a guy that weighs 144 on the night and he weighs 147 Floyd was himself a 135lb weigh-in fighter and was 143 stepping in , its all relative ,, this is not hard to understand !!
so if floyd fought someone that's a WW which is where he fights at... you can't deny that.... then i would give floyd more creditComment

Yes, I would give him all the credit in the world if he beat them(especially Cotto), especially if he knocked them out(particularly Mosley). If he shows back up at his usual fighting weight by Fight-Time, he'll be under 150 pounds. Cotto and Shane will blow up in weight by 10+ by fight-time. Of course, we call this a "WW" bout but it really isn't by the start of the fight.
If he fights them, will this go unnoticed by most like it usual does or will this topic be brought up and be given respect for the weight difference?
If not, maybe Floyd could hire Freddie Roach to negotiate for him so that he can get them to come down in weight so they can be drained by fight-time.
Point: If we had same day weigh-ins, where would these fighters be fighting?
Cotto and Shane would probably be MW/160. Pac would be a WW and most of the rest of the JrWW would be WW-JrMW.Comment

Your right Benny blood doping is illegal and is repacking RBC to increase oxygen carrying capacity of the blood ,,, I should not have used the term blood doping as its different to what I ment and you did good to pick it up .Yes; blood doping is illegal. I'm not exactly sure what Rod is saying but I'm guessing he means you can drain a litre of blood out of your system and then put it back in after the weigh-in which basically isn't "Cheating" because you are just putting back in what you took out. However, blood doping would be extra blood that carries red-blood cells into your system to boost your endurace.
Eh...not sure. I never heard of taking out blood for the weigh-in. That sounds a little extreme. I wonder where he heard it from.
Where did I here about taking blood out before a weigh-in and putting it back after , Ive seen it I wont name who or where but it happens the case i saw myself blood was taking from inside the groin as nobody could see the needle site , it was done by a shady doctor .
Ive been around the fight game for much of my life and was second trainer to Wilfred Gentzen winning the Commonwealth title during the mid 80s , I was not hands on with fighters after Wilf , now I just live in the country and enjoy the fight game as a spectator .
Ive also been involved in dogs both fighting and racing and game****s all have strict weight regulations and I have a close relative that is a jockey and always dealing with weight issues ,,, I could write quite a bit on the methods and pros and cons of making weight but a forum is not the place as it would take to long and too much space to cover it completely .Comment

No Floyd never steps in at 150-154 ,, he was at 148 after a 154 weigh-in with Oscar and he was 147 with baldy and Judah on fight night ,, you got JMM right being 140-145 but you got Floyd wrong although he might have been 150 with Hatton cant remember , Floyd and Manny are very close weight wise on fight night and JMM is a little less than them about 3-4 pounds , but its a big jump to Cotto etc who will outweigh them by 12-16 pounds on the night , thats huge at this level to give away , have a look at the body of Floyd from 135 to 147 its all fluid as he went , look at Camacho from 135 to 147 same deal as fighters go up they just retain more fluid they dont actually fill out to be more muscle , well they do a little but its 75% fluid , a fighter has an optimum weight for him and he has a range he can play with of about 7lbs above and 4lbs below that optimum , any more and your fat or underdone , its always safer to be on the heavy side than on the light side of your best weight .no... believe me.. i understand the point.... he is asking a guy that fights at 130-135 at weigh in (140-145 fight night ) to take on someone that fights at 144 -147 at weigh in (150-154 fight night)

good post man... but but first off... manny and floyd are not the same weight no matter how you phrase it... second... if its such a big jump to fight cotto and mosley why is he fighting at WW???? answer me that... cuz he hasn't fought any big name or money fights in WW aside from setting himself up for a big pay day vs ODLH...Comment

Maybe because he is truly a WW and what I mean by that, he can weigh 147 pounds by fight-time. The others, not so sure if they can. Maybe he doesn't like to drain his body for the scales in order to make weight, thus allowing him to concentrate on the fight during training and not if he can make weight for the scales. There may be a mental edge to it since you know you are likely to show up healthy by fight-time and not risk showing up flat if you don't rehydrate properly or diet down to much to make weight. However, if done right with dehydrating and rehydrating, there is a big advantage to showing up 10+ pounds more than your opponent. Fighters probably follow suit because most are doing it this way which almost forces them to do it to.good post man... but but first off... manny and floyd are not the same weight no matter how you phrase it... second... if its such a big jump to fight cotto and mosley why is he fighting at WW???? answer me that... cuz he hasn't fought any big name or money fights in WW aside from setting himself up for a big pay day vs ODLH...
The question should be: Why are fighters that are 160+ (like Clottey at 170) fighting in a division that says "147"?Last edited by Benny Leonard; 05-15-2009, 07:32 PM.Comment
