  • Insider Notebook: Hopkins vs. Haye? Schaefer Fires Back

By Robert Morales - Mike Criscio, manager of Chad Dawson, told this reporter last week that Joe Calzaghe will come out of retirement to fight Dawson before Bernard Hopkins will step into the ring with Dawson because Hopkins is simply afraid of Dawson.

Well, for those thinking Criscio's bait will result in a Hopkins-Dawson fight, forget about it. That idea was shot down Wednesday with some heavy artillery from Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. And not because of any fear Hopkins might have of Dawson, but because Schaefer is scared stiff at the thought of how poor the ticket sales might be because of Dawson's inability to attract paying customers.

“I don't think Bernard Hopkins has been afraid of anybody his entire career,” Schaefer told BoxingScene.com; Hopkins is promoted by Golden Boy and is a partner in the company. “One thing Bernard has always done, he has fought everyone and has never turned down any fights.”

Since Hopkins is 44, Schaefer said that if he does fight again, it will probably be just one more time. [details]

I thought Adamek was offered 500K to fight Hopkins. Now it's 1.2 mill?

Lol at Hopkins fighting David Haye. Talk about going out with a ****.

Lol at Schaefer and his excuse for Hopkins not fighting Dawson being ticket sales. HBO is willing to pay in excess of 3 million dollars for the fight, they really don't give a **** about ticket sales except as adornment for the backdrop, yet they are talking about ticket sales.

**** the excuses, Hopkins does deserve to pick and choose his spots, but just keep it at that because he doesn't want that fight.

You are both dumb. Every time Haye has had trouble, it's been because his opponents can move, box, and survive. Hopkins would be the best opponent Haye has ever faced, and it would likely be at a catch-weight; meaning Haye would be a little drained.

He'd walk in all ******-confident like the douche bag he is, and Hopkins would survive the first 5 rounds before taking him to school late.

I used to doubt him, but other than his fight with Joe Calzaghe, no one has made him look bad late in a fight, and Haye doesn't know how to box or switch from plan A. His size and power are irrelevant. Hopkins would be fearless, and he'd figure him out quickly.

If there's anything left of Haye after the Klitschko fight, I agree, though it is hard to imagine anyone stopping Hopkins.

Agreed, Adamek is a much more winnable fight for Hopkins at this point.

So what's the reason people aren't paying to see Dawson? If I lived Stateside, I'd go and watch his fights in a heartbeat. He's a young, hungry champ who boxes slick and can have potentially over a decade's worth of fights left in him - what's not to go and see? Sure, he gets sloppy and can be gun-shy for a few rounds, but when he really gets to work I find it very enjoyable to watch. He'll learn.

Maybe people aren't into boxing as much anymore, unless big names are involved... which is a shame. If I had a decent income myself (instead of being a jobless bum), I'd make it my pastime to go to see any British prospects whose names I might hear float around (except those pricks Tyson Fury and James DeGale). I'd feel good contributing to the progress of the Science in some small way.

Shaeffer said that Bernard fighting Adamek would mean Bernard going up to 200 lbs. I'd bet my house that if Bernard ever did fight Adamek, it would be at yet another ridiculous "catch-weight" somewhere around 185-190. lol
