As americans, we dont really get behind our fighters, i mean a guy like pac, who is not an american national, will have far more support among americans than mayweather. A mexican like vargas had 10x the support of an olympic hero in de la hoya. People would just rather turn the other cheek toward american fighters to be honest. Even fighters who are truely american like a fernando vargas and fought on the olympic team representing america, essentially play roles favoring their grandmothers ethnic background to garner attention and support, its just how it is here.
I know how it goes man, that's why I said what I said. I have a ton of examples to backup my point, for example Mosley, he's a humble, amicable, fighter that has a lot of fans within the hardcore boxing fan and isn't a boring fighter, yet after years of winning and even defeating De La Hoya twice in front of big audiences. He's never been able to do anything with it. Mayweather has to be the way he is or he'd be in the same boat.
