Gamboa vs. Caballero is Inching Closer To a Deal

BoxingScene.com was advised that a deal is inching closer for WBA super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero (32-2, 22KOs) to move up in weight and challenge undefeated WBA interim-featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (15-0, 13KOs). I was told the fight was being eyed for a September date, but now I'm hearing August on Showtime. [details]

Another chance to see this guy shine

Gamboa reminds me of RJJr, but with better boxing ability

I just wish he'd stop being so reckless...he needs a Freddie Roach and fast

Tough fight for Gamboa, no room for his defensive faux pas in this one.

Exactly...he gets too flashy sometimes...it's exciting as hell but damn one day he won't wake up.

We've never seen him hurt, and I think we'll see his chin tested. Every time he got a flash knocked down it was over his own imbalance.

If I was a betting man, Gamboa takes this UD over 10 or 12

I personally don't rate Caballero very highly. But he is big and has improved, though his level of competition hasn't been too impressive. I wanted him to fight Juanma but it seems like he's having trouble with weight or something. He lost to Jose Rojas by TKO in the 3rd round in 2003, Gamboa beat Rojas by TKO in the 10th in his last fight. I realise there's a 6 years inbetween those fights so probably nothing much to indicate there as to who wins this fight.
But personally, i think Gamboa can win this as long as he stays cool and doesn't do anything ******. Caballero will try to pressure him and get him against the ropes like he did against Steve Molitor.

I really wanted to see Caballero take on Juanma Lopez before going up in weight but this figth seems pretty interesting. It will be Gamboas first real test. Gamboa has the offense but Caballero will test the Defense and check his chin.

From what I seen of Caballero, I too don't think too highly of him...but I haven't seen enough of him to have a complete picture of the man.

I think JuanMa would break Caballero down and retire him honestly.

Gamboa is no feather fister, but he isn't JuanMa. Caballero will have his chance to shine on Gamboa when his arms go to his waist. I too hope that Gamboa wins this. He's good for boxing...and he needs to move along...he's relatively ''old'' in the boxing world, but in the same sense kinda fresh.

I just wish he hired a top notch no-nonsense trainer. He is someone I'd like to see under Mayweather Sr or Roger honestly, if not Roach will turn him into another Pac.
