    Discarding any catchweight bull****...
I honestly think Pac has a decent chance against Cotto and Shane.
    Berto would be easy.

    So the answer is yes.
Pac can win a legit belt at 147.

As far as I know, you CAN win a title at a catchweight, so yes, it is possible.

An example of this is Hopkins-de la Hoya, which was a 158lb catchweight fight for the MW belts.

I voted 'no' however, because I'm not confident that Pac can beat any of the top WWs, and he didn't take enough punches from DLH, Hatton or Diaz for me to be sure about his punch resistance when moving up in weight.

I'M SO SICK OF CATCH WEIGHTS! It's bad enough we have to many weight classes then we have catch weight bouts,****** mandatory rematches, interm and in recess champions. Just make fights at the designed weight classes! JEEZZ

Another example is Sugar Ray Leonard and Donny Lalonde fighting at 168 for the super middleweight and light heavyweight titles at the same time.

If we see Cotto-Mosley 2 before Pacquiao moves up then we wont just see him win a title in his 7th weight class....we'll see him become undisputed and linear welterweight champ....which will be unreal.

Roach doesn't seem to want him to fight at 147 anymore so I doubt it.

catchweight of 143 or 144 lbs is still WITHIN WelterWeight.....what the hell are you guys talking about not being in welterweight???? even if the catchweight is 142 lbs, if cotto won over Clottey, then pacman will get his 7 division championship IF he beats Cotto.....which is unlikely, this coming from a Pacman fan

welterweight is between 141 lbs to 147 lbs.....

I thought most of the forumers here are longtime boxing fans??????

If they can beat Mayweather at the end of this year anywhere between 140-147 and Cotto-Mosley 2 happens by year's end...or beginning of next year....what else would there be left for Pacquiao to accomplish? May as well take 1 final leap of faith going for broke...and even if a loss to either Cotto or Mosley is the final image we get of Pacquiao in a boxing ring...there is hardly any shame in it.

                    Are you serious?
Any compromise between adjacent weight classes is OBVIOUSLY going
to fall within one or the other.

By the definition you so condescendingly cite, Cotto only has to clear a
high of 147 to fight, but Roach is effectively creating a temporary weight
class between Pac and Cotto/SSM ---hence a catchweight.

That's the issue some folks here have, and no,
they're not ranting ignorant of proper weight classes.

Roach, like others before him, is creating an artificial weight class that
Pac is already at, but Cotto hasn't been for quite awhile, in an attempt
to disadvantage Cotto, or more plausibly to exclude the bigger welters.

If Roach's artificial weight class excludes some legit welters, can it still
be equivalent to the official welterweight definitiom? I mean, we're talking
                    about matchmaking here.

To the bigger WW fighters who might want in, but are automatically
excluded in spirit, it's a very real remove from the real, official
WW class. To the not-so-big welters, there's the disadvantage of
starving down to a lower weight than the real rules say they have to.

There are official divisions and these negotiated, arbitrary weight
classes are ****ing **** up. That's all folks are saying.

                    h.

I get what you're saying but I doubt it'll happen that way, I think Roach will insist on 144 or something like that.
