The further up in weight Manny goes, the more of a disadvantage he faces. He says 142, but he might squeeze in an allowance for 143 for a larger guy.

Roach is trying to protect Manny from Facing a guy that would be 160lbs+ on fight night. It is totally reasonable to look out for the best interest of his fighter.

There is no obligation for Manny to face Welterweights at this point, but they are willing to meet them part way.

I think what Roach is doing is eliminating the larger welters immediately. He is leaving the door open for Cotto, JMM and Mayweather though.

Cotto and Floyd should be able to make at least 143. I think he considers Mosley simply too big for Manny, which is kinda true.

I know why they're doing this, but I can't agree with it. I didn't agree with it when Floyd asked to do catchweights, didn't agree with it when Morales asked Pac for a catchweight, didn't agree with it when DLH fought Forbes at a catchweight,

and I'm not feeling it now.

There are weight classes for a reason.

Fight in them, or don't go up in weight.

On that note, I can see it being very hard for the welters to get down to 140, but the whole point of pound for pound, imo at least, is being able to beat the best in any division, not made up ones.

Great POST. I agree. After Bob Arum intentions were known about Cotto-Pac for November, I posted about the weight having to be 142lbs. Same weight JMM should had stick to before signing the PBF fight.

Even though I agree with EL GALLO NEGRO, let's be realistic. I believe only Mayweather could safely drop to 142lbs. Cotto has an "asterisk" due to previous experiences not that long dropping close 140lbs. But if Bob Arum needs this fight to keep building the hype for winner taking on PBF, **** it then, make it a catch weight. At the end, ODLH fought at 147lbs, but had to step in the ring at 147lbs. If Cotto agree with 142lbs., the question remains... how much weight may Cotto gain before stepping into the ring???

After what I saw of PAC agaisnt Hatton and how well he manage fighting at 148lbs, I believe PAC will go up to WelterWeight and try to capture a tittle the correct way. Cotto happens to be a good champ under Bob Arum that has a solid fan base, not huge, but solid. It's all about the money.

Mayweather will most likely fight Manny at the same weight hes fighting the JMM fight. Not much difference between 143 and 142 pounds!

Cotto and Mosley will get clubbed to death if they try it though.
