Well he pleaded guilty (or no-contest) to spousal abuse and did a year in prison for it. It wasn't the first time he'd been charged with domestic abuse. He had some weapons in the house, but I think those charges got dropped. The story I've heard of what happened is that someone prank called his house and said he boned his wife or something. Chico, being the paranoid drunk he was, beat her for it.
But in terms of "paying tribute to a woman beater", well, to be honest boxing is full of woman beaters. Sugar Ray Leonard, Sugar Ray Robinson (his wife had 4 or 5 miscarriages and his son blames it on how bad Ray beat her up), Jake LaMotta (he also admitted to **** in his autobiography), Mike Tyson, Arturo Gatti, Carlos Monzon (and he murdered her), etc....
