You seem pretty good at doing research. Why don't you look it up yourself? The African presence in the New World dates back to the 13th and 14th century at the least. That's the latest that can be confirmed. When it began is still anyone's guess. Just make sure you come back and apologize afterwards.

Ill give you a class here, ill first to say, That Here in PR were are a mix of 3 races, White(Mostly spanish), Black(Africans) and Taino(Native Indians). But the most you will see is a Mix of Spaniards and Taino, Blacks were concentated more in LA ESPANOLA(Haiti/Dominican Republic).

Now so you can know the names if the different mixtures here they are.
1.Taino + African = Mulato

2.Maluto + White(Spaniard) = Mestizo

3.White(Spaniard) + Taino = Criollo


So Cotto is Probably more of number 2!!!!!!!!

Read Professor Ivan Sertima of Rutgers University has a fantastic book about this and there's much more. Chiek Anta Diop, etc. Not to mention all the visual proof. I believe he means BLACK Africans enslaved other BLACK Africans. They were the ones who sold their own people to the white to begin the black slave trade era.
