Weigh-ins

It was definitely in the eighties. Shortly after the Mancini vs. Doo Ku Kim bout.Comment

Spot on Abos. The primetime disaster between Mancini and Kim ultimately led to 2 major changes in boxing.
One of the reasons for Kim's unfortunate death was believed to be dehydration. So to prevent dehydrated fighters getting in the ring the weigh-in was moved back.
A second reason was the lenght of the contest. Had the fight been 12 rounds Kim would possibly still be around us today. His death let to the abolishment of 15 round championship fights.Comment

^^Right on, I knew that fight was the reason we no longer have 15 rounds but wasn't sure about the weigh in. Thanks.
Both were knee-jerk reactions to his death, I don't think there is any evidence 15 rounds vs 12 rounds has anything to do with injuries, however the dehydration of fighters seems pretty logical and I'm sure has been medically proven that the brain is more probable to injury when dehydrated.Comment

I guess if they were done on the night, it'd cause problems for the sanctioning bodies because they'd have to shake up any titles on the line and reorganise any stipulations based on both fighters making weight.
I mean, if a fighter couldn't make the weight on the night, wouldn't people start worrying about the fight being cancelled at the last minute or something? 24 hours allows more time to get things back together.Comment
