Oscar Played The Game, The Game Never Played Him

By Jake Donovan - A lot has been said of the legacy that is left behind now that Oscar de la Hoya has officially called a close to his eventual Hall of Fame career.

His résumé reads like a who’s who list of the best fighters from 130-160 in the span of nearly two decades.

The events in which he participated made for the most lucrative career in boxing history. More than 14 million pay-per-view buys have been placed when he had top billing, raising over $600 million in PPV revenue, and hundreds of millions more in ticket sales and sponsorship.

There was never a fight in which he participated that featured more empty seats than butts that filled them. Never in his professional career did he face a fighter with a losing record.

He’s the last U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist to truly parlay his amateur success into a lucrative Hall of Fame career.

But there’s one area in which Oscar truly distances himself from the rest of the pack. It’s not limited to his ability to draw crowds and revenue. Nor is it just about the superior level of competition he maintained throughout most of his career. [details]

What? He got his butt handed to him against Pac. Pac made 15-20 while De la and his Promotional company made 60mil. Win or loose De la is coming out on top when it comes to $.

How could the game play him when his last two fights were his two largest pay days?

Noone was happier than me when Oscar got destroyed by Pac. When he didn't get off that stool, I was laughing. But he made 60 mil.

a very overrated fighter, if not the most overrated of all time. money maker? yes he was!!! but a great or even good fighter? NOT! a fan favorite (la & tx)? YES!! won against class "B" and "C" fighters and OLD champions to claim his titles, losing to smaller SSM-PBF-PAC really exposed his talent and heart!!!

i posted it not in the context of how much money he made toward the end of his career...

but in a sense... if u like it that way...

see, he lost another lucrative showdown in the midst against ricky hatton...

if the game didnt play him bcoz of the lure of money, he would've known that it was over the time he fought forbes...
