It's how what you do after a 1st loss that matters most. Cotto lost to Margarito and decided to take a tune-up before going after him again. Paul lost to Quintana and went after him and went all out. Same with Jermain Taylor, first loss to Pavlik and went right after him right away despite the loss that shows a lot in a boxer.
Williams Blew His Own Career!

I'm not comparing the losses, but in the sense that Williams was an up and coming undefeated fighter and hit a road block, it didn't take him long to bounce back and now beat without a doubt the biggest name so far in his career. He's got plenty of potential fights with names at 154-160. I think people are too mystified with having an undefeated record. Some of the greatest fighters in history have 3 or 4 losses being they always fought the best continuously. I'm sure Williams will have a couple more losses, but it shouldn't take away from what kind of career the kid is going to have.I probably shouldnt have said his career because you never know what will happened later but Im talking about his career up til this point and probably even alot of it in the future. Also, please dont compare SR losing to Duran as the same as Williams losing to Quintana. Besides that, SR was already a huge star and so was Duran. Back then losses were more accepted but your stock drops alot now with an L and it drops a ton if its not against a top guy.Comment

What are you guys talkin about? All of you are totally misunderstanding my point. You guys are talking about it from a pure boxing standpoint and Im not. I know he's still a beast. Thats my point. He's a beast but he will have to always be the begger when I think he couldve been the chooser. He will either be a regular HBO guy or have to take the lesser cake for PPV when I think he couldve been the main guy right now. He could be having bigger pay days, with bigger crowds, and fighting the guys he wants to fight. Thats gone now and it will be hard to get that back. To get it back he will have to take less to beat a Pavlik at 160 instead of taking more to beat a Mosley at WW. Trsut me, if he had his way he would be going from WW to MW. Meaning he would clean out the WW, then move up to 154 to have a few fights, and then move up to MW to clean it. Instead he probably has to go straight to MW for any big fights now and will have to take the lesser cake without being any kind of star.
With the kind of skill and freakish look that he has, he could be the man right now. He could be undefeated and have the main stream buzzing. He could be nearly packing the house somewhere and showing up to other peoples fights with the camera pointed at him and everyone saying "thats the most dangerous man in boxing and the most dangerous man weve seen in a long time". That isnt happening nowLast edited by DLT; 04-13-2009, 03:08 PM.Comment

I mean, you're basing all this on assumptions if he hadn't lost his 0. How do we know if Williams would've still been on the low end of the totem pole? What are you guys talkin about? Who's to say he won't KO AA or Pavlik? THAT won't make him a huge name at Middleweight? We still don't know what's going to happen with him and even when he 1st fought Quintana, he was starting to get recognition, but in no way was he declared the sport's #1 phenom.
He's in a better position now than he was a year ago, I think that's more than what you can ask for at this point considering he did take an L. I believe now we will see Williams taking much more competitive fights. He's got way more of a push now than he did even prior to Quintana.Last edited by RL_GMA; 04-13-2009, 03:25 PM.Comment

Who cares about being unbeaten when you have avenged all your losses. One could argue it improves a career. For example, if Lewis had beaten Rahman first time round nobody would have thought of it as a significant achievement but instead he lost and avenged the defeat by knockout. Now he has a win over Hasim Rahman, an undisputed heavyweight World Champion, and in doing so was able to show the qualities that make a true championComment

No thanks, I'm not going to "trust you". You are wrong. Everyone knows you are wrong, why don't you just man up to being wrong and admit it?What are you guys talkin about? I know that as a die hard Floyd fan you have this misguided notion that being undefeated is what makes a fighter good, or defines his career, or relates to his drawing power. Unfortunately, that is about as far from reality as you can get.
The truth is that being undefeated will not make you fill an arena, it will not triple your payday, and it will not make you a better fighter.
The truth is that Paul Williams is a better fighter today because of his loss.
Get over yourself.Comment
