Cotto, Arum To Meet on April 14, Choose New Trainer

Top Rank's Bob Arum has finally spoken out about the recent family brawl between WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and uncle/trainer Evangelista Cotto. As many have already heard from numerous reports on BoxingScene.com, Cotto and his uncle exchanged punches after a heated verbal dispute over a training plan [presented by Miguel] on Wednesday at the Bairoa Gym in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Cotto fired his uncle, the two traded punches, and later in the day they would trade punches again, with a featured incident that saw Evangelista launching a cement block at Miguel, which missed the fighter but broke the window of his 2009 jaguar. Miguel suffered a cut on his nose and Evangelista went to the hospital with a broken nose, chest and cervical trauma. [details]

I disagree. A good trainer is always important. No matter how much "natural" talent you may have, you need a good coach to hone those skills and make you a good boxer. You can come into the gym thinking you're all that 'cause you can fight in the street, but that might not mean **** in the ring.

I had the same coach nearly my entire amateur career, only switching when I moved away and had to start training at a new gym. It was hard at first, but he was a very good coach as well and even after boxing for so long, was still able to teach me new tricks for the ring.

In the pros it seems that you can reach an age where no matter who you got in your corner, they're not really gonna teach anything new anymore. But I think Cotto is still at a stage where he can benefit from a new world-class trainer.

its been said cotto trained himself for most of the fights, so trainers are really overrated.

Again, I don't agree. Cotto's at a stage where he very well might be able to just train himself and beat fighters like Michael Jennings and what not, but that's not going to work for fights against world-class opposition.

Joshua Clottey may or may not be all that people are trying to make him out to be, but he is a very tough man that's not gonna bend under Cotto's pressure. Cotto will have to work for that win. Training himself isn't the best idea.

Check this statement from bob arum
Arum said Cotto’s new trainer would not be Hall of Famer Emanuel Steward, whose name has been speculated widely in the Puerto Rican media. Steward trains WBO/IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and will be in Germany preparing Klitschko for his June 20 bout with David Haye, which will occur a week after Cotto’s fight with Clottey.

One man who will be considered, and who may even be the front-runner, is two-time Trainer of the Year Dan Birmingham, who is based in Tampa, Fla. Cotto plans to fly to Tampa on Wednesday to begin camp.

so i guess emanuel is out of the question and who is this dan birmingham? I have never heard of him
