Interesting, how ranking is important now. When Floyd fought Baldomir for ring title he was ****ed on for that. Yet ok to fight Margarito's leftover not hois conquererer
It was ok for Mayweather to fight Baldomir. The problem is he didn't fight anyone other than Baldomir.
Cotto has constantly fought the top ranked contenders at WW.
Which one of the two beat Maragrito??
Margarito is meaningless at this point. Sure he beat Cotto but he has been caught for cheating and disgraced.
Pwill was in a gr8 position after Marg became the man to beat at 147 cuz he already had a win over him, and he held the WBO belt. Problem is Marg got destroyed by SSM, so Pwill lost his mandate for a shot. And he moved up, got stripped of his belt, and is no longer ranked at 147. Even if he could still comfortably make WW again, Pwill lost his right to demand WW fights. Wit Winky comin up he's been outta the division for a few fights now so it's past the point where guys at WW would need to beat him to call themselves the best fighter there. Cotto don't need Pwill, so it's ****** to say he fears him. I'd luv to see the fight if Pwill could get down to 147 tho, and I'd pick him to stop Cotto.
Lets take a look at Paul Williams' moves after the Margarito fight:
He beats Margarito and becomes instantly one of the top ranked welterweights.
In his next fight he gets outboxed by Quintana whom he was supposed to easily beat.
The rematch ends impressively with Williams stopping Quintana in the first but what does he do next? He moves up to middleweight, KO's unheralded Andy Kolle in the first, beats down LMW title holder Verno Phillips and vacates his WW belt.
Now his next fight is supposed to be at MW against Winky Wright.
He would have a better case IF he had stayed at welterweight and defended his title against solid contenders. Instead he decided to move up in weight and from what it seems the move up in weight will likely be permanent.
