I guess the plaster had a magnetic strip on it that was magnetically pulled to cotto's chin which helped margarito land well above 200 power punches while cotto landed well bellow 200 punches.

So from all this we have cotto who implanted a metal plate in his chin that turned it from mediocre at best to superhuman overnight. To counter the metal plate cotto installed in his chin, margarito had bricks in his gloves with magnetic strips which allowed him to smash cotto's face well over 200 times, 237 to be exact while cotto could only land 179. I guess plaster helps accuracy as well. At then end cotto's supernatural chin still stood up to all the punishments but just took a knee since he couldn't continue.
