A Spoiled Floyd Mayweather Jr. Hurt Boxing

The thing people need to realize is that NO ONE can take away from Floyd's skills and abilities. Only true haters with no knowledge of the sport do, black, white, hispanic etc.
But like Floyd himself said, boxing is a business. Floyd understands that in order for HIM to sell a fight, he has to work hard OUTSIDE of the ring, he has to be obnoxious, he has to make people hate him, he has to claim that the fight is going to be action packed and a slaughter. But this is the thing, he's not doing this for the business of BOXING, he's doing this for the business of Floyd. Whats good for the business of FLoyd isn't necessarily good for the business of Boxing. Like any other business, you need your consumer base to grow, you need your customer to return and pay for your service.
Boxing does not benefit from Floyd generating so much interests from the casual public in one of his fights when he goes in there and does nothing of what he claimed he was going to do.
This is the same with ANY boxer who overhypes an easy or unattractive fight just to sell tickets and goes in there and doesnt entertain the casual fan, doesnt give the casual fan what they expected, what they were TOLD to expect.
At this point, the casual fan feels like they've been scammed. They paid $50 for a fight with no action. How does that help boxing?
Don't get me wrong, Hopkins recently put on a PPV worthy perfomance (IMO) against Pavlik, but the damage had already been done

People paid to see an exciting knockout loss on Mayweather's record not because they wanted to see him win in exciting fashion. It's a fight, no Wrestling entertainment, meaning be prepared for whatever as a fan.
He's had plenty of exciting fights at the lower divisions and has adjusted his style as he fought bigger, stronger guys. If you truely want him to be EXCITING, you shouldn't demand of him to fight the Cotto's and Mosley's.
Demand for him to move back down to 135/140 because that's where his prime punching power and speed is.
Otherwise all you're gonna get for your money is the "possibility" and "Hope" that you see him lose and he might end up winning like he won vs Baldomir or Delahoya unless he scores a Left check hook like Hattton.Last edited by Vladimir303; 03-26-2009, 01:14 AM.Comment

If it wasn't for the fans, they wouldn't get paid.
Nor would many even be fighting.
The fans paid to see Floyd deliver on his promise to entertain them.
He didn't and many of those fans didn't pay to see him again.Comment

I hope I got my point across. I don't think Mayweather hurt boxing because he was boring, I think he hurt it because after the De La Hoya he finally became a mainstream star and retired when there were lots of fights (EVENTS) that would have put boxing on the fronts of sport pages across america. He was on dancing with the stars and his fight with Hatton did 875 thousand buys. I guarantee Pacquioa-Hatton won't do over 700 thousand. Floyd is a star now and right now he will do bigger numbers than anybody in the sport in the US market.Comment

You're so full of it and you know. You're Mexican right? I'm Mexican and I invited everyone over to my house to watch the Baldomir and DLH fights. All but maybe a handful of people wanted to see him get his a$$ kicked. When he didn't get his a$$ kicked they were mad.
Then lets go to the Hatton fight. Most Mexican people were still rooting against Mayweather. That was a sloppy fight, but the few stretches where Hatton actually landed punches all these people at my house were getting hella excited right. But as soon as it became obvious that Floyd was going to win again people got pissed off.
Now, I'm in the background drunk as **** singing the Hatton Wonderland song at the top of my lungs to annoy people because I KNOW that they just want to see Mayweather lose and it's not going to happen. So, don't tell me that there aren't more people who're mad that Mayweather won than people who GENUINELY believe that they were cheated out of entertainment value. They'll say that after the fact, but the truth is the only way they'd have felt truly entertained would be if he lost.Comment
