If you beat De La Hoya, history remembers you favorably if not...

you probably underachieved. Take a look at who DLH fought in his career and see if you agree with me. My theory is that over the course of DLH's career he fought many great fighters, but only those who for the most part "filled their potential" or the one's that are remembered favorably, were the one's that beat him. Take a look and tell me what you think.
NOTE: I excluded Chavez and Whitaker because they were both past it.

Wins: Quartey, Carr, Gatti, Castillejo, Vargas, Sturm, Mayorga
Losses: Trinidad, Mosley, Hopkins, Mayweather, Pacquiao

    So am I crazy?

    This assessment fits.

It would seem like that is the case, however, if you take each fighter individually your statement is not 100% on point.

I think that no one can actually say Gatti is an underachiever. That word means "not living up to your potential", and IMO Gatti more than lived up to his potential. He was never a very talented fighter, but his heart and toughness took him pretty far.

Quartey beat Oscar in most people's eyes. After feeling robbed, he became depressed, didn't fight for a year, and went up to 154 to lose to a red-hot Vargas. There's no way of knowing how history would've been if he had been awarded the decision. But you're actually right on this one, because whether he deserved the nod or not, he has an L vs. Oscar, and this caused him to "underachieve", as he was seen as a fighter with huge talent and potential.

Vargas is definitely an underachiever. He beat Winky and Quartey before the age of 22 and was therefore considered to have the potential to be a very special fighter. However, I believ the loss to Tito, injuries, and steroids ruined him, not the loss to Oscar.

Mayorga's case is similar to Gatti's and Varga's to me. Similar to Gatti in that he didn't have that much talent to begin with, yet got pretty far in the sport (by beating Forrest), and similar to Vargas in that the loss to Tito ruined him. He had 2 weeks to train for this fight, and went from 147 to 160, so this combined with the beating took definitely softened him up for Oscar.

Bottom line is that DLH never beat anyone good in their prime. He lost every major fight against his best opponents.

Chavez was shot when DLH beat him but Whittaker was'nt. Look how close that fight was, any one who says Whitaker was shot is crazy.
