Jones looked the same physically and his bad performance was because Calzaghe made it that way.

Roy was in excellent shape against Calzaghe, otherwise he would never have lasted 12 rounds against a fighter who throws over a 1000 punches in a fight with a killer cut and blood constantly flowing down his face and eye.

Basicaly agree with Reed on this, and on Hopkins - Pavlik.
Between those few fights, you have some profound contrasts in styles and abilities there leading to the fights that we saw.
Roy will look better in this fight against Sheika too, which will underline it. Thing is Omar has some **** and ability, so it's no easy fight still.

Punching bag= look like good condition.
Real opponent = reality.
Same theory is applied to bhop vs. joe and pavlik
Pavlik = punching bag suddenly bhop looks like he's got the conditioning of a 23 year old.
Calzaghe= hopkins age and conditioning due to it is exposed.

He mentions fighting Joe here as well.
In REALITY Roy was in no position for a Joe fight, and he wasnt deserving of one either...
Joe Realisitcally shouldnt of fought him...
If a guy whose ranked #9 in the division calls out the champion, and the champion accepts.. that is in fact a cherry pick...
If Dawson calls out Calzaghe, and Calzaghe accepts... that is not.

Mayweather Collazo is not really a good comparison. A better one would be Khan Barrera, and that's still poor.
Calzaghe had always always wanted to fight Roy, and yes it didn't happen, he coulda perhaps moved to LHW and gotten **** fights and money and still not gotten the fight, whatever. It didn't happen. Joe genuinely wrote him off as did we all, and focussed on Pavlik.
Jones got back on the winning trail, and although not the all time greatest competition we're used to, he was looking better, winning, and enough to be competitive with some of the top ish guys. I.e, a lot still think he'd beat Woods.
Jones worked his way up for that fight, and called Joe out no end, plus was what #7 LHW next to Woods whom faced Tarver next. That is not Joe cherry picking. It was a big name fight and event, one many had always wanted, a deserved pay day, loads of commercial media attention to see still how they're styles would turn out even today, an ideal retirement fight. That's all.Last edited by Kris Silver; 03-20-2009, 02:44 PM.

PRE FIGHT, of course i was being as positive as I could about Roy possibly winning the fight.. and the whole time they were discussing making the fight happen I was praying that it WOULD, BECAUSE... I KNEW.. Roy didnt deserve the fight... he had his name left, and thats it.
Realistically... Roy didnt deserve the fight over the other LHW's... Bernard deserved a rematch, Dawson and Glen Johnson deserved the fight, all more than Roy did...

This fight had to be made. Much like Lewis-Tyson. The public have always wanted to see it, and though it was way later than it really should have been, it was still something we all wanted to see.
Myself, I always said Joe's win over Jones is kinda meaningless at this point, but I understand exactly why these guys fought. Great pay day, boxing fans wanted it, and it was just one of those fight that had to happen.

Id have to say the concensus of people were confused as to how or why Joe was fighting Roy anyways... especially being that a year earlier Joe was stated as saying in an interview that Roy was shot and way past his best...
Of course pre fight I was being as optimitic as I could with the "he coulds" because of course it was Roy... but lets be honest... the guy hadnt beat an elite fighter in FIVE YEARS and had been knocked cold twice...
he plain and simple didnt deserve the fight...
