How good of a win was Calzaghe's win over Kessler

An interview during his preparations to fight Sartison:
The Danish challenger insists that he damaged right hand he suffered in the months leading up to Cardiff fight bears its share of blame that the perfomance at Millennium Stadium was never optimal.
"If a footballer because of a footinjury is not able to train full force in the months leading up to a finals, yes, he will, with reasonable assurance be missing crucial timing and ball feeling, when it goes away. Thats obvious.
But the hand was treated, so it did not hurt when I walked into the ring, and through all 12 rounds I could use it without any pain or problems of any kind."
Kessler also says he fought the wrong fight, but that's just a sidenote.
I cannot copy the Boxingscene interview.
What's said before a fight is never credible. Any fighter will always say that his in the shape of his life and that he has had the best camp ever.

Later you admitted that his hand was fine during the fight and that he was able to land his big rights flush with full power and without any pain. That is not possible with a broken hand. And none of the quotes you found said he hadn't sparred; maybe he did less sparring than he would have liked, maybe that did affect his timing a little. But his timing was pretty bloody good in that fight - for the first four rounds he caught Joe repeatedly with huge uppercuts, and Calzaghe is normally pretty good at avoiding punches - very few people have caught him more than once in a fight with the same big shot. So I don't believe lack of timing was a major factor in the result. And saying that he fought with a broken hand is massive exaggeration.
Had you simply said that Kessler hadn't fought at his best, because he couldn't spar as much as usual, due to a pre-existing hand injury, although the injury itself wasn't a factor in the fight, I don't think anyone would have had a problem with what you said. By exaggerating, you seriously undermined your case, IMO. And I'm far from convinced that it would have made a huge difference to the result if he hadn't had the injury, although I'm willing to accept that it might have been closer.Last edited by Dave Rado; 03-13-2009, 10:09 PM.

Good win. His best, IMHO. As much as Kessler's resume is garbage, the guy is plainly a good fighter, and is in his prime.
I find it kinda odd that people don't think it's that good a win for Joke. I mean, if you don't think it's a good win, then you must really think his career was absolutely terrible, considering I can barely see any better wins.
Lacy, RJJ....even Eubank and Hopkins weren't great wins, IMHO. But Kessler is the one decent fighter in their prime that Joke fought. I also don't buy the broken hand excuse. If it's an issue, postpone the fight.
Still, whatever way you look at it, it's kinda grasping when one of the best two wins in your career in Mikkel Kessler. Especially when you and your fans claim you're an ATG. Rofl.

Its such a shame really, you get real greats like casamayor who are technically better boxers than calzaghe, dont make as many excuses, make the big fights happen, and get no credit.
Casamayor supposedly had some questionable decsions against him, but he fought Corrales, Castillo, Freitas (I think), Katsidis, Juan Manuel Marquez, even when he was past it, he was still hungry for big fights. Thats the kind of guys who deserve attention on this forum.
