I don't understand why so many people think it was an obvious win for Barrera. After arguing with so many people about the fight I wanted to see whether it was such an obvious decision in favor Barrera. I seen a fight where Barrera was controlling the exchanges and Morales was controlling the overall action, if he wanted to mix it up he lost in exchanges. However round after round he fought every second, while Barrera fought when he COULD.
Morales was stung several times, but he came back every time and vice versa. I also noticed that Barrera was given serious favoritism by the announcers, in one case giving credit to Barrera when Morales did something(switching the names accidentally). With the volume off there was obvious advantages in favor of EM, boxing ability, mobility, wider range of punches, and punch out put. He bounced on his toes, threw jabs and rights. Morales did get hit on his toes more then once, this created the illusion that he was hit harder then people thought(he rolled with the punches). Barrera also missed A LOT of those punches in those exchanges, a lot were skimming Morales head and not landing.
Barrera was stung several times in both the 10th and 11th round, every right seemed to sting him and yet Lederman felt it was Barrera's round in both cases, even though Morales landed and threw more and even hurt him more through out the 2 rounds.
Barrera landed the harder shots, but landed less punches and threw less punches. Morales did not land soft shots, so I am not sure you can see it as being that big an ordeal when it comes to power(Morales did throw and land more power shots). Morales landed some very nasty shots as well. Barrera attempted to steal rounds with late round flurries, but controlled less of the round from a overall time stand point and certainly did not land the better shots in all of the rounds. In fact I'd say in at least 4 of the rounds Morales landed the harder shots of the round with his strong right.
Morales seemed to own the first 2 minutes and Barrera the last 40 seconds or so on a few rounds where Lederman gave the round to Barrera. There were 3 hard to score rounds, but I gave those to Morales who was out working Barrera, I thought that Morales threw more/landed more while controlling the distance and the action, Barrera landed the harder shots but only when he could/was allowed to.
Overall with my style of scoring, someone who fights the whole round with out breaks in action I had 115-112(8-4). Morales did throw 270 more punches, and in a close fight I think the man that worked harder deserves the fight. But It could easily have been 7-5 in favor of Barrera during some very close rounds(after all in more than a few rounds he did land the harder shots).
I also felt Barrera was very disrespectful following the fight, while Morales was very respectful and incredibly honest. Barrera made it seem as though it was an obvious decision. He did not give credit to Morales at all. Morales said he was close to going out a few times, but did not. Morales also said that he thought they did a great fight for the fans and that is what he wanted. Morales also said that he would be very happy to have a rematch. Barrera on the other hand was quite arrogant for a man who had just as many cuts and lumps on his face as the other guy. He said nothing positive about a rematch and said we won why do we need one(basically). He also said that the HBO champion is not that good, which is complete bull shiv because he took an a22kicking just the same.
Also keep in mind that the 114-113 score is only because of a KD. It would have been a draw on his score card if it wasn't for that BS KD. None of these judges really felt Barrera won, that says a lot for 3 guys sitting next to the ring.
Overall it was a great fight, there was never a moment where I was bored. Both guys landed huge shots and stung the other more then a few times. Morales was in more trouble on a few occasions. I can see why some would score it in favor of Barrera, but I do not agree that this was a clear cut decision. I have no problem with you thinking Barrera won to a lot of you posters out there, but I do have a problem with someone thinking it was a obvious and easy decision. Just my 2 cents.
