Sad story. I once saw an interview with Emile Griffith, who was talking about the tragic incident. The poor man was clearly traumatised.
There's another sad story about a boxer called Johnny Owen a.k.a The Matchstick Man, from my hometown of Merthyr Tydfil. He fought for the world title against Lupe Pintor. After Pintor KO'd Owen in the 12th round Owen failed to regain consciousness, lapsed into a coma and died seven weeks later.
But in 2002, he was invited to Wales by Johnny Owen's family to help unveil a bronze statue commemorating the Matchstick Man.
yeah i heard about that.....owen had a thin skull from what i heard
As has been mentioned here already some of the animosity of this fight came from paret calling griffith a maricon (******) prior to the fight. Years later Griffith was quoted as saying this
"I keep thinking how strange it is ... I kill a man and most people understand and forgive me. However, I love a man, and to so many people this is an unforgivable sin; this makes me an evil person. So, even though I never went to jail, I have been in prison almost all my life."
