  • "Skinning the gloves?"

I've heard this phrase used occasionally in boxing but am not sure the specifics of it. Is it when a trainer will tape a fighter's glove so that the padding is removed from the knuckle area? Is this correct? Do boxing commissions allow this practice? Does anyone have any first hand experience? Discuss please...

    Cotto does that.

Basically, the gloves are taped really high - packing in the foam in the gloves (if you will)

notice how the tape covers the logo on cotto's gloves VS mosley's gloves.

    that's skinning.

From an outsider standpoint, it looks like it would be kind of constricting with all that tape and counterproductive to the fighter. But, I guess every fighter has their own preference. Anyone else have anything to add?...

i dont know whether you're being serious or not but i wouldnt call that "cheating". its obvious if you look at it and its obvious that officials and his opponents corner have seen it but nobody has stopped him from doing it so w/e.

yeah, cotto is skinning his gloves there, it's a cheap move for an advantage, i don't know why the officials even sign off on the wrapping or taping of the gloves when they're like that? or even the other fighters peoples not saying anything?

lots of fighters do it, some more subtle than others, i do think it's cheating, it certainly makes the gloves harder, but it is something that is easily spotted, so each time you see a fighter with it, either the officials are incompetent and not doing their jobs or they're paid off to not notice or say anything, because it's clearly illegal and easy as hell to notice, so it's not like it's something that can hide, the only thing that separates the degree of if its effectiveness is how high the tape is up on the glove............ but skinning is nothing compared to loaded gloves, or drugging a fighter. from what i've seen, usually guys get cut as a result of skinned gloves......

remember rocky juarez's damaged eye in the barrera fight???that same eye has given him problems consistently since.....i blame the skinned gloves barrera was sporting that night....

another reason to hate cheater barrera....
