That's a perfect illustration of what I mean when I say that people under-rate him.

I would say Mike Tyson is overrated and I will tell you why. I say he's overrated because when you hear PEOPLE talk about him, it's as if a prime Tyson couldn't be beaten and that's not true.

I remember talking to people who said a prime Tyson would destroy Ali, it just made me laugh.

Tyson was more than just a puncher, he was very well schooled in the game, had great head movement, boxing ability and of course had incredible power.

What he was missing was work ethic, toughness and focus. He was so naturally gifted that he felt he didn't have to work hard and him just showing up in the ring was enough to beat people, he later found out that wasn't the case.

Tyson was very exciting but I wouldn't put him in my top ten HW all time.

More overrated than ALI, Marciano, De La Hoya, Pacquiao, Johnson, and all the other cliche fighters?

You know who really was underrated though? Sugar Ray Robinson.

Holyfield and Marciano are the most overrated. Ezzard Charles was already losing fights when he went to war with the Rock. Patterson might have knocked Marciano out. Holyfield ran from everybody when he was champ the first time. Holyfield is a gladiator, and could win a big fight, but tell what was his most impressive defense? Michael moorer the second time. I think Wlad who would have beaten evander.

Despite that they achieved a lot more and spent more time at the top than Tyson did.

No one will excuse Louis' loss to Schmeling even though he barely trained a day for that fight nor Ali's loss to Frazier although he had been out of boxing for 3 long years.

It's a myth that D'Amato's death affected Tyson's career since Tyson had not even fought Berbick for the title by the time Cus had died. You could make the case that firing his trainer Rooney did, though.
I agree with what your saying but there is also a striking difference between the Tyson that would run over to help his opponents up and stroke their faces with care after he knocked them out than the Tyson that bit Holyfield and Lewis. Something happened in between that made him find evil.

He wasn't above such antics even in his "prime" but he was able to control himself more.

i did not read the article, and i've written a lot about tyson in the past, it's getting old.

competition wise, i can point out 5 to 6 other 'ATGs' that are rated higher than him with lower or average resumes, but i wont go into it.

pre prison tyson was a solid figher. Obviously when he faced Buster he was still young, quick, and in his prime but it was a poor showing on his part, and every bit his fault. He was a pro not an amateur and should have known better. the buster that fought mike would have troubled the likes of Ali and other greats even if his record tells otherwise, so people should chill out and labelling him a 'bum'.

i believe had mike never returned after prison he'd be rated higher and respected more today. Sure he could still kill people, but he was a one punch stalker who fought meaningless fights (for big money), and the only names that added to his legacy afterwards were his epic fights with ruddock, and a shot version of bruno in a rematch. his road back with a title.

his fights with holyfield and lewis are really meaningless, but both evander and lennox get credit for their wins.
